north east wetsuit

Hi all,

Am gonna be surfing in the north east (uk) soon and was wondering will it be warm enough for a summer wetsuit or will i still need a 5mm?

Depends how much you feel the cold as well! Some nutters SWIM in the north sea in boardies.

Try renting a summer suit first? See how you get on?

I use good quality 3mm from start june to lend October, but have a selection of under suit vests of various thickness of neoprene that add warmth with if it's cold - and usually boots (and I hate boots).

If you go with a summer suit - make sure its good quality, blind stitched and sealed seams or your're really gonna limit you time in the water.

If you're gona surf in the winter it gets well nippy so get a 5/3, you can use it in the summer too.

Don't buy the cheapest suit you can find. I did just that and regretted it, got a 5/3 Luna point for £90 but there was zero stretch so paddling was a fricken nightmare. I now use an Xcel Infiniti 5/3 £160 off fleabay... its the mutts reckon I'll always buy Xcel from now on.

I surf Cayton Bay/Scarborough in a 5/4 or 3/2 - both C-Skins, and they're fab. Nice and cosy, no problems with cold. I got them on recommendation from Cayton Bay Surf Shop - I'd imagine others in the NE area (NorthSwell, of course!!) are equally helpful.

I second that! I dont surf up north but they are very toasty wetsuits! If you do decide to buy online be sure to try them on in a store first so you know that you'll be happy with the fit. It even varies from summer to winter wetsuit! Both of mine are Cskins Angel suits but the summer one (weirdly) is a much more difficult fit than the winter one despite being the same size.

IMO - its worth spending the extra £20 in the shop to be able to take it away there and then and knowing it will fit rather than buying it online and finding out it doesnt fit and is basicly worthless to you.

I surf in the NE. Id say that if you bought a summer wetty you'd probably only use it for about 2 months or so, then it gets too cold and you will have to go back to your winter wetty, trust me iv experienced the cold here.

I wear my winter one through summer and dont get THAT hot.

So, if your trying to save money, i wouldnt bother.

how thicks a winter suit to you guys on the north coast? i might be moving to south tyneside either this september or next september. just wondering if you guys wear a 6/5 or a 5/4 through winter months?

I surf in a 5/4 in winter, well i'm still in it coz i'm a bit of a wuss. I'll be in the 3/2 as soon as we get some warm weather though through till the back end of september.

I just stick to my 5/3 all year round, gets a bit warm in the summer but I can deal with it.

My nearest break would be Tynemouth, but I only go there if nowhere else is working...... crowds and the ya ya snobs do me nut. I much prefer a beach a couple of miles north.

Where abouts you moving to in south tyneside?

I'm going off topic..... Yeah I know the college, where's your career heading?

As for surf spots, I haven't been south of the tyne so there's no place I can comment on. When I go on a mini adventure I usually head up north bamburgh etc.

well, hopefully i'll become a marine engineer, working on ship quite a lot, which means traveling a lot, but depending on which company i get with, i might travel the whole world but other companies only do European shipping (which would still be fab)...

anyway...yea would be cool to meet up sometime or something, go for a surf if you want?

Cool, I'm starting a new job as an ROV pilot tech next week, gonna be working in south east asia. Big change from 9 to 5 to 12 hour shifts 7 days a week, 4 weeks on 4 weeks off!!!

Aye, I'll be up for a surf when I'm back on shore.
