i want to shape my own board, need some advice

Postby surfsc77 » Sat Jul 21, 2007 7:26 pm

i want to shape my next board, and i thought buying a package would be a good way to start. heres the board i was thinking of getting

http://www.foamez.com/index.php?main_pa ... cts_id=393

my questions are

if i take my time, how long will this take?

does anyone have experience with this company, and does it come with directions?

would this first board be anything i would want to ride or would it most likely be crap?

thanks in advance

Mark

your first board will not be that great i know nothing about the company as i am in the uk. if you are going too do it get yourself self shapeing 101 and glassing 101. a retro fish may be a tall order for your first board lol
hope this helps
cheers es

Actually a retro fish is a good choice I think :D

Try searching the Swaylocks forums for a PDF and you'll see what I mean.

In that case you may even be able to get away without shaping 101, etc... Maybe :D ut then trawling through Sways enough does that anyway :)

I agree with doug on this one a retro fish is a good board to start with. Your much more likely to get a reasonably good board performance wise.
The hardest bit to get right on a surfboard in my opinion is the rocker and with a retro fish the rocker is much flatter and easier to get right.
The butt cracks can be tricky but do your self a favour and don't make it too deep.
Glassing too, keep your laps nice and short and defo get a copy of shaping 101 and glassing 101 they are invaluable.

Hope this helps.

G'day KS!

How was Costa?

I reckon Shaping 101 and Glassing 101 are really useful for most people starting out. Unless they'd prefer to put in many hours of other reaserch and experimentation ;)

What I was saying is, just for making a retro fish, you migh be able to get away with just downloading, reading and working from "that PDF" many of us have seen floating around (url=http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%2Bsurfboard_design_and_construction_1977.pdf&btnG=Google+Search]surfboard_design_and_construction_1977.pdf[/url].

Not how I'd go in the longer term tho :D But OK for a quick start.
