tanker-wake surfing - Texas

Postby jonny » Mon Aug 23, 2004 4:23 pm

I live nowhere near Texas and have no immediate plans to book a surf trip there, but watching "Step into Liquid" the other day, there is a section on a bunch of guys who travel out in powerboats off the coast of Texas and find the huge oil-tankers.

They grab their longboards and ride the wake of the tanker - 2-3 foot wave that lasts for about 3 miles!!! At the end of the ride, the boat collects them up and drops them off at the tanker again for another ride.

Apparently it's really difficult not because the wave is a funny shape but because their legs start to really hurt and ache after a while!!!

Looked crazy!!

Anyone ever tried this???????

I really thought that was need but the thing that intriged me on the video was the Hydro fin boards (foil boards i think). that looked like they were surfing on a cloud. pretty crazy and I'm going to make one of those soon.

o ya... I remember seeing those. They are like anchors that keep you out of the water by like 3 feet. I saw it on a 60 minutesinterview..... not like i watch 60 minutes but it was worth it to see the best big wave surfer.

It's a cracking film actually. Bruce Brown features in it quite alot too! Funnily enough, the last two dvd's we got in have been Hang and Step into Liquid - two utterly different films but Robert August features in both of them with his house in Costa Rica etc.

He has such a great outlook on life - his way of looking at the world is you are only here for a little while in the overall picture so just try and do your bit to make a nice and happy place. And try not to trash it!

Simple as that.

I like it.

I'm in Texas right now getting medical treatment... but as soon as I'm back to 100% i fully intend on taking advantage of having to be in this otherwise shitty state. I think I'm just gonna drive down there and try to find someone who will show me where to go... should be fun. I'll let you know.

1st, im spoiled, I came to texas from austraulia, then before that so cal

2nd, im too far inland anyway to get down to the coast taht often, until I can drive, can't drive yet. That should make a diffrence, but otherwise I liked where I was ten minutes away from surf in socal and down under.
