Also known as "all the gear no idea"

Those are the people who think they are too cool and have a fragile ego, thus its better to not try at all because then their fraud will be exposed, but they think they can fool everyone by either just hanging out on the beach the whole time, or just doing a few paddle laps and coming back in. I saw some guy by himself with a shortboard and just laid on the beach for about 4 hours tanning himself. Then he packed up his towel and board and left. He never even looked like he had any intentions about trying to surf. If only he knew that he looked more foolish not surfing at all than at least attempting to surf.

 I see and know a few people like that. They have too much ego to go out and make a fool of themselves which is all part of surfing. No one goes out first time and looks cool quite the opposite.

Sodo surfers eh?

I haven´t heard this said before but funnily enough i have noticed this phenomenon on many an occasion! Suprisingly often i´ll notice someone sitting in the line up and just, well, sitting there. One fellow was "surfing" a break here in Portugal and sat in the line up for three hours without catching a single wave as far as I could tell and missing some perfect opportunities for great waves! It´s weird, just...why!?

When people say to me "Oh you surf don't you?" I normally reply "Well I'd call it more swimming with a board strapped to my leg!"

I've got all the gear and am try to get the idea! :D

Or second, or third... lol

Theres a guy driving round at the moment who pulls into the Splash car park, gets the board off the car (big flashy 4x4), goes down the steps, sits on the beach for a while and then chats away on his mobile about what an epic day he's having.

How the fleshin' he manages the 'epic day' without wax or when its as flat as a witches xxxxx I don't know

3 hours? that is weird. If he was scared or exhausted from paddling or something I could understand sitting around missing waves for a certain period of time. But spending anything more than 20 minutes sitting without even trying for a wave just seems really weird. Verdict: He's either a total nut-job ot a sudo-surfer (I love that title!!!).

I think you guys mean
PSUEDO SURFERS.
It was a term we used back in the 70's when we were talking about posers.

Well...I did notice that after leaving the water he returned to his partner and three screaming kids. In retrospect he was probably out there to get some peace and quiet.

I can respect that. I have wife, 2 kids and a yellow lab so I know how it can get at times. Still seems weird to go to a popular surfbreak though and just camp outback for a few hours. At least work out some frustration on the waves or something. Maybe he was on acid and was just staring at all the pretty colors or something!!! :-)
