Platonic Relationships?

Postby isaluteyou » Thu Jul 05, 2007 9:08 pm

Heres an interesting thing that cropped up during one of my more philosophical discussions.

Whats your opinion on purely platonic relationships.

I have many female friends but the relationship is purely friendship a sthere im in no way physically attracted to them. However the real nub of the argument here is do you think its possible to have a platonic friendship with someone you are physically attracted to?. Im not talking about mild attraction but rather the type when you have to hide the drool everytime she is in a bikini

Only if you foolishly get yourself stuck in that "Just friends" zone; and then it's not truely a platonic relationship; it's just a guy who doesn't have he fleshin' to make a move. :)

So my answer would be no; unless she's ugly then it doesn't matter.

I think your asking the case that your friends with someone agian purly plutonic; but: 'you would' should the situation ever arrise?

Being honist here! I too have loads of female friends again they are jsut good friends never thought baout relatonships etc with them but... 'you would'!!! hahah

ITs an odd situation really.. I would go out of my way to do that if you know what I mean?!?! Just if circumstances where differnt. As they ar I think I have a far better and valuble plutonic relationship with them.

Ah, the rhetorical question...

Yes, I think you can have a platonic relationship with someone you are highly attracted to. It will remain platonic until you shag then it is a "relationship" at least according to her.

Of course it's possible to have a purely plutonic relationship with someone your really attracted to.
Physically attraction is only part of the reason why your attracted to someone. Their personality and who they are is just as important.
So even in a situaution where for whatever reason (for example they're already in a relationship with someone) you can't be with them then you can still be best of friends. It's not allways that easy to do but if you like them that much then you have to set aside your physical feelings and concentrate on your friendship.

But deep down, you know that if they weren't with a partner, you'd wanna bang them.

No i entirely disagree. I wouldn't risk a life times worth of friendship just for a sh4g if i thought it might jepordise the friendship.

If banging her ruined the friendship, then it wouldn't have been a platonic relationship; because it would be obvious that under the surface, there were hidden feelings, be it one way, or reciprocal, that have now been exposed, and are causing complications and awkwardness.

What d'ya mean "if they weren't with a partner"??!!! You wanna bang 'em anyway - you just can't!!!
You see, men are weak. We just have to accept it and move on. We're pretty much all the same. We can't help ourselves. Its both a curse and a blessing of nature. We can have the most gorgeous, shagtastic girlfriend at home and yet we still "would" with the hot chick that works behind the bar, in the shop, surfs your local....whatever!!!
That's why god gave us balls, so women could kick us in them when we stray!!!
mmmm....women.....

This made me laugh and is quite relavent ,
methinks.

Do's and Don'ts of Cultivating and Maintaining a Platonic Friendship with a Woman You Would Otherwise Want To Have a Relationship With and Quite Possibly Marry.
DO play and replay scenarios in your mind where you come out and declare your true feelings to her, whereupon you proceed directly to frenzied yet sensitive, passionate, and completely fulfilling love-making.
DO NOT actually attempt this.

DO rehearse elaborate and impassioned declarations of your love
DO NOT ever let anyone hear you doing this.
DO NOT ever actually give her the speech. (Instead, drop little, enigmatic, self-deprecating hints to her, and then agonize over why she does not pick up on them.)

DO listen to all her problems with men:
No matter how many times you have heard her make these same mistakes (with other men), DO NOT get so entranced by her soft, full lips that you lean forward and kiss her. (Fantasize about it instead.)
DO feel the knife twisting and your insides tearing up as you listen to this
DO develop a gnawing enviousness that grows into an insane jealousy

DO commiserate with your close guy friends. See who can come up with the most heinously painful story about "The Treatment." Shudder in unison.

DO NOT confide in any of your female friends, because:
They won't understand.
They've done it themselves. In fact, they enjoy doing it.
They'll think you are talking about them.
They are obligated to pass on their knowledge to the Psychological Warfare Division of the Sisterhood to Destroy All Men.

DO get drunk and maudlin about her
DO NOT get drunk and confront her

If you do reveal your true feelings to her while drunk or in an otherwise abnormal or altered state of mind (incl. unwarranted happiness, ridiculously deep depression, brain fever, etc.), DO deny and disavow all statements the next day.
DO say how it would be such a big mistake if you were to get together with her.
DO joke about it afterwards.
DO NOT cry, break down, and admit that you have been carrying a torch for her for ___ weeks/months/years/aeons.
DO NOT consciously avoid her for the next two weeks (avoid her unconsciously).

DO curse yourself for being a miserable, spineless, pathetic, emotionally-stunted fool.
DO promise that you will change, that things will be different.
DO NOT actually change.

DO agonize about whether to sign letters to her "love" or "your friend"
DO NOT pretend you are kissing her when you lick the envelope.

DO vacillate between fearing that she will discover how you feel about her and hoping that she does.
DO seek out opportunities to hug, air/cheek kiss, and give/receive back rubs
DO NOT let things get out of hand (if this should happen, apologize profusely and disavow everything)

DO become trapped in a shallow, meaningless, lifeless relationship.
DO NOT actually seek out a secure, quality, lasting relationship, as this would interfere with your fantasizing about her
DO complain bitterly about this awful relationship to all your friends and to her.
DO create a web page that is vague enough to be relevant to the masses, yet specific enough so that the one, special platonic friend you've been carrying a torch for reads it, comes to her senses, and fulfills Fantasy #4

So how come your asking all these questions on our opinions of platonic relationships? You falling for one of your friends or something?
