I heard about the Glasgow thing on the Saturday night; watched it on CNN on the Sunday morning and flew to Aberdeen on the Sunday afternoon.

What was I worried about? The usual things, not being able to open the sick bag in time, only getting one G & T etc.

It doesn't matter if bombers are Doctors, Lawers or street sweepers the threat is the same and that threat is what the papers decide it is.

Yep i know you just get on with your business, bombs and the like are only scary if you happen to be in the wrong place wrong time etc.

The fact that they are doctors is a little scary, so they just happened to plant bombs on this occasion, but what if there real objective had been far more sinister, like injecting patients with a virus that spreads easily, like bird flu (can't remember the deadly versions number) A road sweeper is incabable of that.

Fortunately that kinda stuff is really hard to get hold of without 'the security services' getting wind of it. Thats why they're using rubbish petrol/gas cyclinders bombs. Thank heavens for incompetent terrorists.

I thought something along those lines when I first heard of the attempts, then I thought a little deeper:

Why such amateur devices? they were VERY simple incendiaries with the gas canisters supposed to get hot enough to explode showering the area with nails etc. highly unlikely to actually work too well, very hit and miss.

Why would supposedly intelligent ( allegedly some of these guys were medics and docs etc) used such an unreliable weapon when recent TV documentaries have shown that terrorists barely out of their teens have managed to aquire the knowledge to build ammonia based explosives? or even more effectively, copy the technique the IRA used to get plastic explosive, to power the explosions to spread their nail bombs?

As for being afraid? I suspect the country will continue much as it did through the 70's and 80's, when PIRA were detonating bombs in shopping centres etc. Its worrying sure, but its nothing we haven't seen before.

Big Man - were these people being stupid not using ammonia based devices - or actually quite clever??

To purchase the amounts of ammonia you'd need would set off alarm bells and be traceable (would have to be ordered in meaning two visits to same store, chance of store ringing old bill, etc)

Butane/Propane gas is available anywhere - and no-one would bat an eyelid if anyone went in and bought 4 or 5 cylinders - especially at this time of year.

And had these nutters been able to get the cylinders out of the boot, they'd have gone pop soon enough.

Oh - and trust me when I say that the effect of just one cylinder going off would have been 'real' enough in an enclosed space.......

I'd also disagree about the PIRA thing - in those days the PRIMARY aim was NOT to get caught.

With these nutters, you can ring the place with armed guards and it wouldn't stop them, because they don't having 'getting away with it' high on their priority list.

Not that we should all cower in fear, but the solution will take some guts - and I don't think for one second it would get past the liberal bet-wetters!

OK - actually, I think the point about 'freedom of speech' is quite a simple concept - and one which brought out the 'racist' comparisons initially. If you direct any sort of accusation against certain sections of the community, then you open yourself up for abuse, whatever the reasoning or validity of the comments. If those self same sections of the community act in the same manner, then it's overlooked.

As for childish comments - well, we've already had the slightly more sinister (and more likely to get you in trouble) calls of 'nazi' and 'racist', haven't we - or is it OK to falsely accuse people of such things?

You see, unwittingly, you reinforce the point about freedom of speech quite nicely........
