I have been surfing for a short time. The only problem is not getting on the board. But that's not really why I started the thread.

Why is it that some surfers need to be assholes?

I surf at Virginia Beach, The thing I don't get is why some have to be so territorial. I can see that the attitude would make since if it was some super secret-amazing spot, but this is a public beach.

I was moving out farther into the water when I hear a "SHHHHHHHHK" and see some buff fleshin' heading right towards me. I didn't really have enough time to react since He was about 9 feet away at the time. He turned sharply(purposely, I saw him sraighten out) hitting me on the bridge of the nose with the tail of the board. So now my eyes are watering and stinging from the salt water.

When I open my eyes he get's in my face and tells me to "go home". What's the need for acting like that?

the things is it's not like I just walked up and stood there while he was on the wave. I was walking towards it and he just paddles hops up and heads STRAIGHT for me.

You better learn to deal with it. Nobody is going to fight your battles for you. Sometimes you have to pay your dues to be accepted. Most guys that surf pride themselves on being able to take care of themselves, but there are some guys that can be real dicks.

Yeah, arrogant a$$holes are a problem. We've all run into (figureatively) them at some point. Best to shine them on, move down to the next peak and enjoy the stoke. These prick$ just want to inflate their overly inflated egos by picking on someone, anyone.

Look at it this way. You've been waiting and waiting for a decent wave to come through. You've been fighting the other people to scramble for a wave. You finally get one and someone is right there, in the way...destroying your ride.

Ok, this doesn't make it right. He shouldn't of got in your face and stuff And, just for the record...I am against localism crap.

I find it easier to paddle out wide of the break, so I don't get run over, and say a friendly "hows it goin?" to the guys out back... It helps a heap, and usually everyone's cool with me as long as I don't take more than my share of waves.

Of course, I occasionally get belted by a set, and can't get out of the break zone in time and sometimes someone does nearly run me over. It sucks, and it happens no matter how hard I try. A simple apology helps in these situations.

When I'm on a wave, I expect the same from the other people in the water.

in fairness, his only other option was to run you over. so paddle out and stay wide let them take their waves and then take yours, always have 2 looks over your shoulder to make sure your not dropping in

Yeah I would get away from 1st Street Jetty. There are nice people there and then there are the jerks. Just move down the beach a bit.

My bro-in-law spent last weekend down in VA Beach and surfed at the 1st st jetty area. He said it was really crowded. He rented a 9 ft. BIC and was getting harrassed by some punk teenagers on shortboards. When he rode a wave in from the point of the jetty to several hundred yards up the coast for about 15 second ride on a rental BIC, they didn't bother him anymore and actually started cheering him on. Supposedly they're weren't many longboarders there but the few in the water were really ended up being the celebrities.

If you just stay clear of the crowds while you're learning everything will be fine. The local experienced guys are just really testy right now because of the summer crowds. If you live locally, Sept/Oct will be a good time to go back to the jetty area once the tourists are gone.
