Popping Up Help (Short/Fishboard) - Chris_Dakine

I currently have an NSP Fish 6ft 4in (I'm 5ft tall) and I can't seem to pop up. I want to learn on a funboard/longboard but if I did buy one, I wouldn't be able to bring it to the beach because whenever I go, my cousins or friends hop along with their surfboards. So Thats the best board I can use. I stood up once or twice but not by "popping up". The only way I see logical to pop up is to use my toes but they don\'t rest on my fish board. So whenever I try I end up popping to the stance with my knees (Not standing). I read other topics similar to this and now I'm trying the "Jackknife method".

Heres a picture of my board:

this is pretty much a funboard for your size and the nsp 'fish' is not really a fish anyway.
I don't think its a good way to pop up with your toes as this will become harder to be executed when you get a shorter board. I am not too sure but i suspect that you do not have a strong chest to lift your body up high even during the pop up?

This has been said before in other posts, but basically you need to train your body to pop up without needing much mental input from your brain.

You need to practice on the floor of your house, and instead of thinking about which foot goes where and when, you need to just do a pushup with your hands at about your lower ribs, with your palms flat (also do this in the water rather than gripping the rails tightly), then swing your legs under your body and as you do so, twist so you are crouching side on.

keep practicing, and don't consciously try to use your toes or feet for the pushup as these usually aren't on the board. Because you're lifting from your lower ribs, there isn't much weight on your legs anyway, so it doesn't matter what you do, so long as they are (more or less) together, and not creating a lot of drag in the water.
