Thats a long time away.

1st go swimming, get fit and work those tummy muscles/do push-ups etc, that'll help when you get in the water & have to paddle.

2nd, move to cali & go to a surf school or rent a few boards, your probably looking at a short/slim longboard for your size/weight, 8.5-9ftmax, 22 wide 2.5-3 thick or something tops, to start I'd say try out an 8ft BIC rental unless you go to a school.

Some great surf in Santa Barbara. Sandspit when its breaking is phenomonal. Sands Beach and Devereaux are good too. Pick up a longboard and head down to C street in Ventura. Lots of good waves to be had there. It can get crowded but the crowd has always been cool. Not real aggressive, nice and mellow.
