Mate, there is no surf on the north east of Qld, ever! Well, there is the occasional wave on the reef on big swell days but its not a surf destination!!!
All the action is in the South East!
If its the North East you are going to September is a pretty good month to be there. Its hot all year round so no warm clothes are needed! It should be mainly blue skies and fairly dry heat although it starts to get humid again late in September.
There should be no stingers around either!!! Ideal to be there in September, especially early September.
Get yourself down to Magnetic Island just off Townsville and check out the wild Koalas - its mating season so you'll be able to hear them calling.
There's loads to do up there but no surfing!!!

Yea, surfwise you should venture further south. Mooloolaba, Gold Coast, most of NSW.

You'll be looking at a journey time of about 8-12 hours as you would probably have to change planes. If you could fly direct I would guess it would take about 6 hrs from Cairns to Perth.

By plane, most flights from brisbane to perth require you to change planes at melbourne.
You'll be looking at around 7 or 8 hours travel time, including changes of planes etc. Check out
http://www.virginblue.com.au/

they have prices and arrival/departure times online.
