shaping

Postby trails surfing » Sat Jun 16, 2007 4:52 pm

so summer is here and i find myself with alot of free time, and i've been wanting to shape a board for a long time. my question is has anyone here shaped a board befor? how did you learn? the final goal i have is to shape a balsa wood fish. but i don't want to buy the wood then mess it up and keep buying more, that will get expensive fast. so my plan right now is to get my hands on some cheap blanks and try my hand on those. but i still think i need some help, i've seen he video shaping 101 in some shops but not sure if it will be of any use. thanks for any help you can offer.

First you should try a search because I'm sure this topic has come up before. Also check amazon.com for books on the subject.

Shaping, glassing and airbrushing 101 videos are all really really good. Recomend you buy them watch them and then when you have some specific questions ask away. There's a few of us on here who shape our own boards.
Or do a search.

If you have not seen it, here is a good thread about shaping and the trials and tribulations of making a board.

i read on another post that the movies are only good if you are taking notes, but the book that covers both shaping and glassing, which costs only 20$, is better so i ordered that. a friend of mine has a different film that shows the guy shape two boards, so i'm also going to watch that. my next question is about balsa boards, if you've seen riding giants then you've seen the guy make those balsa boards from blocks of wood, so why would people buy a pre made blank that costs a whole lot more.

sorry, my question is why would you spend the money on a pre made balsa blank, and not make one out of balsa wood blocks.
