Surf Breaks near la rochelle?

Hi,

We`re off camping in france for a week or so and taking my mates van and the surf boards.
we`re going to be heading towards la rochelle - does anyone know of any good surf breaks round that region?

kite surfing areas too as we`ll be taking the kites aswell

About 45 mins North of La Rochelle is a filthy little wave called Bud Bud. Surfed it a few years back.

The whole coast has peaks up & down a long sandy beach. It is more rocky to the North where there are a few reefs & points.

It's a pretty quiet area and only the main beaches get crowded. It doesn't pick up the full brunt of the swell like (Arnaud de) Lacanau & (Igor) Hossegor which can be a bit of a relief on bigger swells!

I have done 2 surf trips in the past to that area.

As said there are loads of waves to choose from and the people in that area are really nice too.

We ended up going south of the islands "ile de Re" and had no problem finding regular surf.

i`ll ask my gfriend tonight about the names if you like as she`s french - they have some daft sayings and phrases!

i`ll check otu where bud bud is on the map. went to lacanou and mimizan last year and probably later this year - some nice swell there! bit far to go with the time we`ve got though.

i typed `bud bud` into google maps and it came up with somewhere in somalia - lol!

Arnaud & Igor are birth-names which pronunciation is similar to Lacanau & Hossegor.

I'll give u a clue, it's from a film...

This a break called Les Conches just a bit further up the beach from bud bud. Not quite as good but less crowded. Thats me getting burnt by a local!

hey, i'm new here though not new to surfing. i'm well familiar with the spots further south but now it seems like i'm gonna be in the la rochelle area for the first time next week, so this thread has been very helpful. now, the trip wasn't planned (paris for a week was the plan) and i won't have time to go home and fetch my board, so renting is the only option. any ideas where to do this? i ride a rather small mini mal usually but both longer and shorter boards are fine depending on the waves. as long as it's not a foam rubber one of course. ;-) also i obviously didn't bring my wetsuit, will that be a problem? i know the water will be pretty cold but as long as the weather is nice i should be fine? for some reason i did pack my shorts and rashguard. :-)

Hi, I was in La Tranche sur Mer two weeks ago and surfed, Les Conches, La Terriere and Bud bud. Most of the time in a rash and boardies. The sea was warm enough to not use a wet suit. However, the sea was full of Jellies, so a suit may be a better option. If you need to rent, theres a shop on the road to Les Conches which does rental. There's also a surf school on the Beach at La Terriere, but I'm not sure if they rent gear.
