Shoulders are killing me

Postby mike2266 » Tue Jun 05, 2007 12:50 pm

I started surfing about a month and a half ago and was/am in very good shape. However, I find that after paddling just a little bit, the back of my shoulders are killing me and I can't paddle any longer. I was wondering if this is normal. I hurt my rotator cuffs a few years ago but never went to the doctor. I think this may be the cause. What do you guys think?

Doesnt matter what exercise you've done, paddling will still make you sore when you start surfing. Just paddle more.

Hmmm. Due to a variety of circumstances, Ive not surfed in weeks - gonna be sore next time I surf

yup hes right paddling makes everyone sore first few times and if uyou havent surfed for a while. its because it uses different muscles to a lot of excercises which just arent used to being used like that. like if u dont play football for 3 years then play 90 minutes for the first time your legs hurt and still hurt 2 days later.

My shoulders STILL hurt - but I do find recovery time is better than when I first started surfing........

Just so happens there will be something to lesson the dreaded shoulder/neck ache on the market in the not too distant future.........

What do you have coming out Surfing innovation. I want to make sure that I get it and no one else where I surf does. That way they all get out of the water and my arms are still fresh for another couple hours.

Just sounds like good old muscle fatigue to me. Just stick with it and the muscle should get stronger, if you go to the gym I think lateral pull downs should help.

Dont forget to warm up and stretch in your cool down

make sure you stretch on a regular basis, also exercise that part of your shoulder by squeezing your shoulder blades together.

surfing fitness sites

working on the muscles specific to surfing might help your pains. You need core strength and arm movement endurance. Check out these links (I hope they work, I just copied them in) sites and see what you think.
