Mini Mal or Magic Carpet

Postby coldkook » Sat Jun 02, 2007 5:19 pm

As it says really I'm looking to get a new board and want one that'll catch some of the small east coast summer swells but also be nice to turn. Thinking or either a 7'6" mini or a 7'2"/ 7'4" carpet.

Any advice on these options would be most welcome. :D

Cheers.

I've got a Nine Plus 6'10" Carpet and it's REALLY good fun - but it really needs to be pretty clean surf, otherwise it gets sketchy.

But for those clean days, it's great!! :D

Magic carpets are supposed to be Longboards with the middle 2.5ft cut out of them. It's not entirely true, but they do perfom in a similar way. Most carpets will be single fin, as the 3 fin option basically turns them into a fat mini mal.

As the two boards go, the carpet is deffo the performance option but it's a slightly different style of surfing thay are suited too. Awesome in waist high winding points, not so great in average beach break.

The mini mal is a good solid option. Nothing to flashy, but it will get you into waves early and give you plenty of speed to make the sections. Stick a decent set of fins on and it will be shaper on the turns.

have you thought of a funboard? useful for the small swells but you can have a good time even in bigger surf. ive had mine out in 6ft+ surfand it was still fine.
