I heard an interesting story the other day
Whilst a beginner was surfing with his friend on his new short board , he fell off and his board hit his friend in the side of the head .....thinking it was just a cut they headed off to hospital , where it was discovered the tip of this guys board had pierced his friends skull and punched a small hole into his brain.

The moral of the story is get a Nose Guard for your short board !!!

I think it is soooo funny that people beleive it is "uncool" to have one on thier boards. I have one on all of my shortboards, wouldn't Surf without one. I have seen, firsthand, what a board can do to some ones face. My bud got hit about 1/4 inch below his eye, with a tip. Did a good bit of damage, but could have been a lot worse if it was 1/4 higher. Everyone GET A NOSE GAURD, you look like KOOKS without them

yep ive just bought a niseguard for my shortboard as its very pointy. However is this really going to stop it stabbing someone? Its not that thick. Just a bit of thin rubber on the end. I bought the billabong white one since it was cheapest at £2.99

I dissagree, It would be a lot less damaging to have a rubber tipped board hit you than a pointy piece of hard fiberglass. Still going to hurt, and do some damage, but I am willing to bet it wouldn't be nearly as bad.

When I get custom boards shaped I specifically ask for a dull nose on it. I mean, what good does a sharp one do anyway? It's not as if you surf with the nost of your board

Noseguard would help a little if you got hit. So it's worth a few bucks!

i got a mate who was out surfing oz and it was pretty big, board hit him in his lip on a wipe out and the noes of his board was missing, he thought nothing of it was having such a good time he paddled back out, when he got out thier everyone was looking at him funny, turns out the noes of his board was wedged in his chin

I got hit by my own (long) board a couple of years ago - split my eyebrow open pretty wide - fitted a nose guard soon after!!

My friend got hit under the chin by a shortboard - went straight through his chin and through his tongue - luckily he was dragged to shore by other surfers (he was out cold)......

Morale of the story - if you don't use a nose guard - especially (but not exclusively) on a pointy shortboard, then you're selfish (at best) and an idiot (at worse)........

Dude my shortboard has a reaaaaally pointy end, I used to always say how much it would suck to get hit by it when i fell or something so I was like scared of my board when i fell. i always tried to push it as far away from me as possible when i fell, but then one day i finally got poked in the back by it and ripped a nice hole in my back so i got out of the water, walked a half mile up the street and the guy in the shop gave me a band aid and a nose guard for free, pretty sweet now when im about to fall or whatever im not afraid of my board, or hittin other kooks in the water. (there are so many rednecks down here that rent boards) but yeah definately get one if your boards pointy

I don't understand why people make/buy boards with really pointy ends...
it'd be like a death wish for me!!!

I can vouch for how much they hurt... Got hit by the nose of some idiots board the weekend before my op, I guess it must have been about 3/4 wks ago and it made me feel so dizzy. Had a lovely instant purple bruise and swollen face I thought myself lucky though as it was right about my right eye - an inch or two lower and I hate to think what might have happened

I agree it'd be selfish to ride a pointy board without a nose guard (plus dangerous for the person riding it!)

They make 3 sizes. 1 for a shorty, 1 for a Log, and 1 for Fish type noses. I don't see a lot of reason for a Log or a Fish to have them, but shorty's for sure need one.

As I said earlier - I put one on my longboard the day after it shot out of the water and split my eyebrow wide open!

They may not be sharp and pointy, but they tend to be heavier and make a fair mess if they hit you!!

Good "point" LOL. I see what you mean, and I have been hit in the jaw with my Fish before. Not very hard, but enough to get my attention.
Anyone here use the Surfco soft fins? They have a soft leadiging edge, making them "safer" than regular fins. Check out thier website, they got some photos of various wipeouts, involving standard rigid fins. Pretty greusome pics though, just thought I'd warn the people that can't take seeing large gashes, and punture wounds. http://surfcohawaii.com/testimonies.htm
