I don't see why Tescos gets it in the neck so much for getting it right.
So many other stores shops, chains etcetc have tried to become the best place for quality/value/range etc etc... and tesco is the biggest success story in buisness today.

I agree 100% with you there Papa

My Tescos here in Uxbridge stocks food from all over the world because of the large amount of foreign students in Brunel University.

The local small shops dont offer that choice

I like shoppling in Tescos because of the choice of product and I like the prices.

I'm with PapaW here. I dont mind them, the majority of consumers have chosen and it looks like they have chosen Tesco's.

I dont particularly like their range of meat. veg and stuff seems to be okay (bland like anywhere else on the high street) but I grow my own so only have to buy in winter cos I havent figured out how to grow productively in winter yet. I have bought socks, knickers, pens, paper, birthday cards and all sorts of stuff with my weekly shop and it is fair quality gear. I did start going to a local butcher, all organic free range full on TASTY (Real Meat Co.) food but in the end could not sustain the cost and they're not open at 10pm unlike Tesco. Tesco and any other 24 hour supermarkets fit in with my lifestyle - I usually work at least 12 hours a day so dont have time to go to the shops before 8 in the evening on my way home from work.

I think Tesco's were in the right place at the right time - when consumerism REALLY took off and we 'needed' the supermarkets to be open really late cos we've been working really long hours to pay for our numerous 'needed' purchases. I have heard about how walmart screwed over many comunities in the US but if you dont want to lose your local shop use it. Tesco's is a business responding very cleverly to supply and demand and thats all.

But you miss the point; these businesses would not exist unless you shopped there. Everyone says they hate chain stores, but they deliver (usually) where boutique stores sadly lag behind. Opening hours, consistant quality, cleanlessness (and I'm a butchers son, I know all about what happens in "boutique" Deli's and food shops etc when your not looking), I can say for fact supermarkets have far higher standards and more budget behind them for health & hygene processes, and most of all price.
We have high principles about supporting local businesses, and watch too many Jamie Oliver foodie shows, but really when it comes to the crunch, most people have a limited amount to spend on groceries each week, you're not going to throw away $127.40 at the local shop when just down the road you can buy the exact same stuff for $110...at 3am!
