board storage dilemma

I have to move to the Brighton area in the next few weeks. I looked round a few houses/flats tonight and I've seen something that's almost perfect...

it's a really posh penthouse apartment sharing with the guy who owns it (who happens to be a doctor at the accident and emergency dept of the local hospital - handy or what! ). The bedroom is massive, the flat is massive - it's got more rooms than I'd ever use and a gym. The best thing is the view - and a roof terrace bigger than the whole house I live in at the moment! 360degree views of the whole area including facing south and the sunny coastline from Brighton to Worthing, right in front of the hotpipes (where I surf in winter). Absolutely magnificent. You would actually be able to see what the surf's like without getting out of bed... or you could stand on the terrace and watch the surfers etc.

I've never experienced anything like it - and (I don't know why) it's affordable!

BUT... there's no garage, the lift is the world's smallest (fits one midget) and the stairwells are VERY narrow and only about 6ft high. There's no physical way I could get my 7'2 up to the flat, let alone my 9'1. i can't posssibly take it unless I can sort this out.

WHAT DO I DO???????????????????????????????? I've just come home and looked at renting a garage somewhere but they're all about £100 a month and several miles away can't afford it...

Where would I store my boards? Does anyone else live in a flat/apartment? What do you do with your boards? Help/advice wanted asap!!! Thanks!

Any of the nearby houses have lock ups? put an advert in for somwhere to store your board thats going to be way cheaper than an garage...

I'd be surprised if you couldnt get the baords up the stairs, at least the 7fter. Prolly the 9ft tho not regulaly.. Do that till you matey up with someone who has more convinient storage for the longboard?

Know anyone in Brighton? Mebe someone on here does...

I am a littel confused. If you can't get your board up to the loft, how would you get your furniture up there. You will have to excuse my ignorance lofts are not real prevelent where I live.

you know what, I don't know! I know he said that he gave up with a large 6ft6 bookcase and threw it away because he couldn't get it up there... but I'm not sure about all the other stuff.

Am going back again on saturday to have another look and pop in the surf shop for some advice on storage! In the meantime, I've got a few small ground floor studio flats (with not such a great view!) to look at tomorrow...

Yeah but a 6'6" bookcase is gonna be waaaaay chunkier than a board. I reckon you'll be able to get at least your 7'2" up there, if not both

apparently he built most of his bit and pieces up there and has to take them apart when he moves. Still wondering about the bed though...

will take my boards along tomorrow and try! (I still think there's absolutely no way my longboard will get up all those stairs and corners!)

update:

two of us couldn't get my 7'2 round the first corner of the stairs... so no penthouse apartment for me then

popped into one of the surf shops... the guys had some temporary ideas for me... but all temporary (including letting me keep my boards there till I find something permanent - how kind )

having a look at ground floor flats... seen a few that seem suitable but have to view them next week...

in the meantime I've found a house with high ceilings full of other teachers who surf so I may end up sharing it with them...

Those Brghton flats are a nightmare - I've had to do more nose and tail repairs from stair dings over the years than any other kind of board injury.

If it was Jez at Small Planet who offered to help you out, he's a top bloke, he won't sell your board or anything!

Probably the best solution if you want a nice flat (cos the seafront ones are stylee), is to have an ask around at Carats cafe by the Hotpipes, and see if any of the people with beach huts there will rent you a corner, and give you a key to the hut, or if Carats will let you put an advert up on the wall in there.

I wouldn 't leave it in a vehicle, it's bound to get nicked in Brighton.

The other option is to get a long rope and drop it out the window, but I could see that ending in tears when a SW gets up

Make sure you get a surf at the west pier at low tide on a good groundie - living on the seafront is great for checking it when it works - it's fickle but gets damn good once or twice a year, you've just got to be on to it when the wind swings offshore.

Also, it would probably be worth sticking a request up on sharkbait, the local surf report site, see if any friendly locals can help you out.

I could always ask my mum - she lives right by Soldiers Point, and is well used to a garage that looks like a surf shop.

haha get a rope and tie it to the railing on your balcony and lower/hire the boards and furniture by tying it to the other end of the rope haha just a thought but it seems like what i would do

I'm vieiwing a few more places on Monday, some of which are old houses/ ground floor flats with high ceilings so I'm keeping my fingers crossed! I've got 3 that look very possible, although none have sea views but I can't really be that fussy, and it'll only be a 5min drive to check out conditions!

and yes, parking is a fooooooooooking nightmare in Brighton!!!! It's all double yellow lines for miles, or else permit holders only... and huge waiting lists for a permit I've never come across a place quite like it!

hi. iin south oz but have a similar problem, i.e. surfboard sizer and how to fit it somewhere. i'm looking at bisect.com boards. they break in half and fit together. they make smaller ones so have a look. i'm interested in how good they are though as i just can't find anyone who actually owns one. is it a great idea with crap material ???? just don't know. (look them up thought, www.bisect.com )
