Wetsuit Advice for a Newbie

Postby surfhobbit » Mon Jul 10, 2006 11:29 am

Hi Guys

I'm getting my first wetsuit on saturday and am looking for some advice from you seasoned pros...

Ideally I'd like to get a shorty for summer use and a steamer for the rest of time.

Will a shorty be warm enough for UK waters in June-Sept though? (Or am I better just getting an all year round steamer?)

Also, what thickness should I go for with the steamer for Autumn -> Winter -> Spring use? 5/3, 5/4??

Ta muchly

I'd go for a 5/3 steamer - thats what ive got and its pretty warm without a rashie or anything underneath.

I just tend to wear shorts the rest of the time!

A shorty will be warm enough for the water, but will feel very chilly if the air temp isnt all that warm. Morning's in september will definitely feel a bit chilly!
You can get 'summer convertibles' - a full steamer, but the arms detach.
Personally, i'd go with a full summer suit - 3/2mm.

For winter you'll need a 5mm suit (plus all the associated trimmings - boots gloves bla bla bla). 5/3mm should be fine :D
