Beginner help

I am interested in learning how to surf. I have a friend that is going to teach me but I have to get a board. I have no idea what kind to get or even where to start. I dont want to spend a ton of money now and decide I dont like it later so I would like to keep it kind of cheap. Plus I am only 15 and dont have a lot of money. What should I be looking to spend? Thanks in advance!

Ya if you can rent a 8-9ft Bic or similar fo learn with for a few times, then think about buying one.

i mean just look at some boards and decide which one you like, dont listen to all the nonsense about not being able to learn on a shortboard i got up on a shortboard ridin waves and and turnin and stuff in like 3 days plus longboards are much more expensive. i guarentee once you get out there and try youll know you love it and youll have a surfboard around the rest of your life

well not everyone starts out like kelly slater so id go with everyone else bigger will be easier.

id say go for a bic, depending on what weight and height u r, if ur very light, go for either a bic or nsp shortboard or minimal, n if nt then get a longboard or minimal...come to thnk of it minimal n funboards wud b gd.

rent out a board first tho, cuz i went ahead n bought a 6'7 shortboard after a softop n i found it wasnt good for me, so have a look about before u buy nething. dnt rush it

Problem with being a learner is theres no way you can tell what a good or bad board is, and a good board for a learner isnt going to be a good board for an intermediate.

Slight changes in shape , thickness/volume can make huge differences in how the board works. Its hard to tell even from a few pics & measurements without seeing the boards.

An 8ft bic is definatly a starter board and worth renting at least. Else talk to a surf shop you trust.
