Surf trip this Saturday...advice for St Merryn area

Hi,

Going on holiday this Sat. staying in St Merryn, Cornwall, for a week. Truly cannot wait, seems to have been a long time coming.

Now, I'm a surfer, I'm going to Cornwall, taking my only used twice custom board with me, no worries...I'm happy. I'm going with my wife...who isn't a surfer. A few years ago I was VERY selfish and surferd even when it was cr*p, everyday, no consideration, grounds for divorce

Can anyone suggest things worth checking out to keep a 'non surfer' happy in that area??? I'm trying to stick to a day in the surf, day sight seeing kind of thing, is there anything I shouldn't leave without seeing? appreciate any advice...

Did you actually read my post??? Iwas staritng a conversion about a certain part of the U.K and if there was anything different to do there. Possibly what a forum was designed for? Are you ?

Appreciate less of the attitude man. In case you didn't notice I have been a member for over a year...hence I have a pretty good idea of how to use a forum.

Hey Derby!
I stayed in St Merryn for a boys surf week only last month.
We had a wicked time. In st merryn you've got a couple of good pubs and restuarants, i recommend the cornish arms by the church which is a little away from the the main crossroads but worth the walk. Be warned they do stop serving food a little early, i think about 8.
Theres also a nice restaurant called waves on the higher harlyn campsite and thats ace but you have to book.

Surfwise you've got harlyn which is just up the road and there is loads of free parking too. We didnt surf it that week as it never picked up but i spoke to a local and they said sometimes it does. Oh and you've got constantine too.

Aside from the restaurants above you're gonna have to travel to find much else going on.

Wadebrige isnt far and you can hire bikes and cycle the old tarka trail which is fun or just explore the town... but that wont take long.

Thats about all i can offer Derbs, have fun tho and if you can recommend anything once you get back PM me as i'm back down there in sept

Oh, and there is a mad go kart centre nearby... a friend of mine went there on a stag do a year or so ago. Apparently they are the most powerfull karts in the southwest and he said it was one of the best days out he's had... but you'll have to work out where that is

I,m new to surfing and was wondering about the difference between shortboards (fish , thruster,) longboards and minimals.
Can anybody tell me which boards are suitable for which conditions?

When we go away (ie the family), what I do is have a dawn surf (say 6 till and then spend the day doing whatever (sight seeing, sitting on the beach, etc) and then I have another session just after tea - everyone's a winner!!

We tend to go to the St Ives area - plenty of quality beaches down there to have a look at.......

Needed the important info regarding the food!

I surfed at Polzeath earlier in the year but didn't get anywhere else, really short trip, got my board from Escape in Rock so looks like like I'll be sorted there.

I'll go to Wadebridge with the missus, the bike hiring sounds like a plan.

No need to edit, all makes perfect sense, great help.

Have fun when you go down there...I'll let you know if I find somewhere cool too!

Does your family surf? I find the biggest drawback with surfing, and working is when you plan a weekend away, it goes flat, so you go out with your 'better half', but she feels likes 'runner up' because there is no surf! I work every other weekend so when this happens it gets really annoying, for both of us...

Maybe set up an agony aunt section, I can't be the only guy who finds himself in this position?

I am very fortunate. I get out about 3 times a week, and my wife says I don't get out enough. She loves coming down and watching. My kids love to surf also so they are always stoked at the opportunity to get out.

Of coarse this also means I have to support her in what she likes to do. As much money as I spend at the spa I should just buy one

For the wifie - Fantstic bit of coastline around the re and travose, up to wade estuary. Wadebridge has got a nice selecion of independant shops. Padstow also has this but usually heaving as its a bit of a twee harbour town. still worth a stroll.

Urm... what sort of things does she like doing? ad how far you guys want to travel? The estate I work on is 30mins away from where your staying, as are a number of other National Trust estates/land in a hours drive (you NT members?)

Hi Old Guys Rule,

Great that you go surfing so often...wish I lived close enough to go as much. My 'local' break is 120 miles away so it's a good day out, still that makes it more special...when it isn't flat lol!

I think a big part of being a 'landlocked' surfer is enjoying the whole day, the people you meet, and the laughs...good waves obviously fit in there too!
