The Queen is Coming!!

Postby ginat » Thu May 03, 2007 2:31 pm

Cool! The Queen is coming to the United States!

I know you've probably all seen her portrait by Annie Leibovitz, but I think it is really lovely:

Apparently we are all a little nervous about the protocol thing too:

Yup, showing up at my airport today. I was downtown last night and they already had the roads blocked off around the capitol for her. Big to do, I had no idea everyone worshipped her that much.

I had to take the toll road instead of the way I usually go :x

My knees went weak meeting President Clinton and I cried when I saw the Pope and I'm not Catholic. I think it is really more about the roles they hold that puts people in awe.

I really enjoyed that movie The Queen with Helen Mirren in it. I felt I understood her world just a fraction of a bit more. I was in Paris when Diana died and remember nursing a beer at a bar early the next day and hearing "Elle est mort" for the first time. I'll never forget it. The Queen had an impossible duty that week, one I can't imagine navigating. She certainly is interesting to me. I have no judgment of her either way but find her simply interesting.

i think people out side the UK look at the royal family diffrently than we do.

i couldnt give a damn about the royal family it wasnt untill a few years ago that they had to start paying tax. they do bring in alot of money from torisum but thats about all they are good for.

They're alright. They never asked to be in the royal family... and you'd miss them if they weren't there.

Plus Harry is great for entertainment value!

Oh okay, I'm afraid they will edit it quickly so here it is copied and pasted from CNN:

"Queen Elizabeth II waits on the red crapet at the airport in Richmond, Virginia, as "God Save the Queen" is played."

She's waiting on the crapet... Ooops!

 THERE IS NO EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THIS!!!!

I should probably show my colours first...I'm, a member of Republic - the campaign for an elected head of state.

But this is the most common argument that is used in support if the monarchy. But surveys have shown that the overwhelming majority of tourists would visit Britain whether there was a royal family or not.

Look at France, it attracts three times as many visitors as Britain, and the palace of Versailles enjoys many, many times more visitors per year than windsor castle.

Well being in the military, I see that the Monarchs still play a large part in stuff. Well somewhat. The queen is the Commander in Cheif of all Commonwealth Militaries. Aswell as alot of the royals(prices and pricess') are Honourary Colonels of units.

Good old philip! He's good for entertainment value too

Check out a few of the things he's come out with. My fav is:

When talking to some british students in Oriental Asia (think it was China), he joked with them "you shouldn't stay here too long, or you'll turn slitty-eyed"
