Solomon Islands Tsunami

A couple of the local boys were caught up in this & have set up a fund to help...

"Me and a mate have just come back from the Solomons where we'd been scoring some unbelievably good surf day after day- long long barrels! But on April 2nd, a massive earthquake triggered a huge tsunami to hammer through the Solomons, completely destroying the village where we'd been staying with some locals. Their palm leaf huts on the beach didn't stand a chance. We only just escaped, and lost all our belongings. But more importantly, the people there have no homes now, and are camped up on the hill, too afraid to go back to where the village used to be. We've set up a fund called the Ghizo Tsunami Fund, and we hope to raise money to help the people get back on their feet. They have literally nothing left apart from a few machetes and some lanterns. Mark has kindly agreed to put a link to our site on the East Coast Website, once it is up and running. If you feel the urge, please donate some money as it's going straight to the chief of the village for him to distribute amongst the villagers, as we hope to return out there and help them ourselves. It would really mean a lot to these kind and amazing people to receive help from their surfing friends in England! Thanks."

not to sound too pessimistic, but sending some check to the 'ghizmo tsunami fund' half-way around the world from where the actual disaster took place and to a guy who's now posted twice doesn't exactly sound 'kosher' to me. but, then again, i probably have like 15 posts, so i guess do whatever you want.

Too true. It is a big tragedy and i really feel sorry for those people involved and would love to help, but i can't help but feel that this is not the way. Show me i'm wrong and i will leap at the chance, but who are you? There are many large, organised international agencies helping who have the planning to make a real difference in situations like this. I'll give my money to them unless you can trully show me that you can do more. Sorry to be so short about it but it's my money that i am giving to help others and i want it to do just that, help others.......

Like I said, two of the local surfers were caught up in the recent Tsunami. They lost all their belongings and had to come home but this was nothing compared to the loss experienced by the villagers they were staying with.

We are just trying to help them get word out about it, nothing sinister. As soon as they get their website up & running, I will post it here.

Yeah, it always makes it's way down here, just never gets as big. The banks are pretty poor at the moment as the last storm wrecked all the beaches
