Deck pad for fsh tail ?

Postby the kid » Fri Dec 29, 2006 1:11 am

Hello
I just got a Webber 6'8 semi fish, should i use a deck grip pad, will it fit? Or is wax better? Does wearing booties matter for either? Sorry if its a dumb question but ive always used wax, but the pad seems better, do they make them for fish tails?
thanks.

I would avoid deck pads. They give you rashes if you haven't used them a lot. If you really wanted a bit extra grip, use a tail pad.

As for boots, unless you surf a realy shallow reef, or it's freezing cold I wouldn't suggest using them. It's a little bit more uncomfortable and un-natural.

This is just my opinion and I do know people that use full deck grips and wear boots on beach breaks!

I'd go with a tail pad, no problems fitting one on a fish.

As for boots they are a neccesity in some parts of the world, mostly thinking of the cold waters, and as Dec said on sharp shallow reef, but they don't affect your performance too much.

I have an OAM pad on my Rusty Piranha and it looks fine just as WRV demonstrated on his board. In the end, it isn't all about looks, it has to serve a purpose in which best suits you. If you like having that nice grip, then go for it. If you think wax is enough, then go for it. Good luck.

Gorilla Grip make a specific fish tailpad. We have sold quite a few now to guys with boards like Piranhas & Super Skates. Probably won't be much use on a Retro style fish as not so driven off the back foot.

i hate using tailpads. it feels too unnatural. I think that wax gives you a better ride because you can really "feel" your board. But that's just me.

YOu can get grip that consists of just the kick tail stops you slipping off the back . I have one on my keel fish I found everytime I went to do a vertical slash going backside by backfoot would sometimes slip through the massive "W" shape tail resulting in a triple inverted scrotal smash and severe seperation of the twins!  :? With this little kick it keeps the foot in place and a lovely pair of unblackened giggleberries!! Everyones happy! even the missus!!

I have a fish with tail pad and small kicker on, it works great!!! I can dig in for really tight bottom turns way more than I think I could without it.
