You dont need gloves - the water's been so warm this year I haven't warn gloves once, but I do HATE gloves!!!
Saturday looks OK for Croyde - I've gotta take my girlfriend to the train station for 8am then I'm heading down. Be there for midday'ish. High tide is 6pm so should be able to get the best of what there is.
I just need a surf so bad!!! Its been about 2 weeks now and I'm becoming delirious!!! I'd surf anything right now, I was so close to hiring a swell the other day and hitting the half a foot of ripples that were pounding the Witts!

How can I resist?

Two things wrong with this weekends forecast - first of all the swell is very weak (as well as small). So it wont produce as much of a wave as you might expect. Then those winds - 20mph winds is pretty strong so it'll make the paddle very difficult (ie you'll find it hard to catch anything) and it'll blow the waves flat because they're so weak (some of the best spots will hold onto a wave on the pushing tide).

Even if there is a wave, it'll probably turn into a beach dump ie not break til its in very shallow water because the wind is holding up the face. Which is doubly frustrating because the waves look gorgeous, but are really hard to surf

I would expect this weekend to be very small and weak at croyde, and the wind to make it almost unsurfable.

With the winds from the north east, saunton may just about be surfable on the pushing tide. But its gonna be a bit rubbish. Might be better further (a lot further) west, but that wind will still make it tricky.

The problem with both MSW and surfcore is they use computer models rather than a real person. Both models have their flaws - in particular they dont take swell direction into account very well, and they dont compensate for swell 'strength' when there is an offshore wind. So it'll give it a high rating because the wind is offshore, but doesnt take into account and that a large powerful swell is required to work properly in those winds.

I dont think its worth the trip this weekend - but as you're pretty close and its only a run up th M5, then it might be worth it. Going to be rubbish, or difficult, at best. Flat by sunday.

Of course, I might be wrong....

You make it sound so appealing dbb. But i really appreciate your views as a newbie.

I have to get out this weekend just to get my board wet and get out the house... i guess it'll be the same as fistral/perranporth/polzeath with the wind then? I can just as easily head that way

I know the 'need to get wet feeling'

Pretty much of a muchness. Fistral etc will be a bit bigger than north devon, but will be even more exposed to the wind :?

Of the well known spots, I think I would go with north devon and surf saunton, or possibly croyde late on the push (I'm guessing you dont want low tide barrels...)

Yeah, do that. Have fun.

It wont be consistently good but its possible there'll be moments when the wind drops that it might go clean and nice. If it does, get in or stay in, cos it wont last!

Saunton was lovely today!! Nice clean 3-4foot. At low tide it was pants due to the wind but as the tide came up the swell built and it finished up with head high clean waves. Nice!

Yup, I looked at the cams and thought 'bugger, called that one wrong!'

Well - I said to surf at high tide and at saunton, and that it might be clean and nice temporarily, so I wasnt far off. But I admit it turned out nicer than I expected. That wind was nowhere near as strong as forecast.

So a big :yearght: for me

definatly. first surf of the year so i stretched a few bits that needed stretching plus i have a whole week in cornwall just after easter so i should get a few proper surfs then.

was still nice to get in the sea anyway but i had a banging headache by the end. should of warn a cap.

oh, excellent fry up in braunton. a little bistro at the traffic lights. highly recommend. maybe there should be a beach guide area on the site with places to eat, get lessons, hire etc?

Weather looks nice for this weekend. :D
