I live in the north island of New Zealand (Tauranga), but grew up in the lower part of the South Island (Dunedin). I have been involved in water based sports extensively in both islands and I know of no place or business or charter service in this country that offers cage diving, shark chasing or anything even close.
Shark fishing in the Bay of Islands (a town called Russell) perhaps (that's very near the top of the North Island). But no diving with sharks oppertunities (even in cages)....we're much too clever for that madness :-)
Australia is full of mad Aussies and yep, heaps of it going on over there.

i hate to brake your bubble, but you're not that clever ;) j/k

Well, learned something today haven't I. That is what's on the web is often not all it's cracked up to be.
Hell, I live in the biggest big-game fishing area of New Zealand...and I have never even SEEN a shark cage let alone these services being offered to the public in local media, never heard others talk about them or their personal experiences in dive shops or anywhere actually.....
Good luck however. I suggest if chasing real sharks (not 3 foot hand-fed for the tourist Mako's) is your goal, South Australia is a much better choice.

Admittedly Mako sharks aren't the kind you'd want to see diving - I think you do them a bit of a dis-service there. Mako sharks are dangerous sharks and impressive animals to say the least.....as are all Mackerel sharks. If all game fisherman were so blase about Makos then I'm sure there would be many more injuries.

thedownunderboy wrote:crap, i live in Australia. Sharks are a problem here. That coconut crap is false. White pointers are everywhere, and they are huge here. I have lost two friends to shark attacks. And one of those was an empty casket cuz all that was left was a chunk of board.

I don't beleive "thedownunderboy" i think your full of xxxxx! you say you've lost two mates to shark attacks? the sharks here are few and far between. i surdf and SCUBA dive offshore. Send me the proof and i'l consider beleiving you!

I already bailed him up in an earlier post myself.
I made the off-hand comment that the chances of PERSONALLY knowing somebody killed by a shark was rare enough.....the chances of PERSONALLY knowing two is so astronomical it's not possible. I too asked him to front up with specifics, and to explain his relationship with each party involved. He never did.

From his posts you'd think us Australisians (I'm a Kiwi) were at deaths door everytime we hit the water. I suggested if he was so concerned he should buy a chess-set and give up surfing & not bother upsetting beginners & young kids who also read his rantings.

My kids took up surfing in the Myrtle Beach area last year. I go out in the water with them and float around.

A couple of weeks back we saw a frothy area in the water, so we got out. As it came closer, we could see fish jumping around, and sharks circling, "herding" them. They can turn on a dime!

When the frothy are moved past us, we all got back in the water.

Then, a few days later, we were out there again, when I saw the fins of another shark, maybe a 5 footer, about 5 yards from me, in front of the waves. He was moving parallel to the beach. We didn't panic, just started to move in. When we didn't see him again we went back to where we were. Also saw a baracuda a few feet from me that day, and some tiny shark-looking fish that stayed with me, swimming around my legs, for several minutes.

So, they're there. Usually you just don't see them.

Ok let me tel u about the sharks we get here, we have Grait whites, tiger sharks, white tips, algies, reef sharks (cant remember the name) and um yeah thats alll i can think of now. Wen i wanna go surfing I have 2 go over reef then i get this fleshin' up brack line that u dont wanna surf but have 2 get over it cose at the back of it there are 15 F waves grawling at u, calling u... now on the paddel there u dont wanna look down, dude, there are sharks every where (the water is nise and clear) so u C xxxxx hapening down there witch u really wished u did not C. We have had 3 shark atacks in Sod´s and all 3 was torists swimming or boddy surfing what ever u call it. There was ones that a shark atacked a surfer, but it was in the late 70´s, ppl here stil talk about it its like a Urban legend here... they sead that the sharks are a surfers frend and all he whants 2 do is show u a world with bigger and stronger streems, urges, waves and the truth of freedom. I have been padeling out there from the age of 9 i am now 23 and stil alive dude don´t think about the sharks man think of what u can do whit the big open wave in front of u... wen its ur time 2 die atleast the shark wil kill u fast and think of it ur spirit is released in the ocean, if its not ur time ul have the scares 2 show ppl u have been there and u have don that. Well dude hope u get surfing cose ur mising out on the only ruch better then sex. So dont B so sceard if i can do it u can 2, dude, and im a girl. Gist respect the ocean and it and its creachers will respect u.

shark attacks

Postby FREEDive-Maui » Sun Sep 05, 2004 6:13 pm

yo guys I free dive and snorkle every day along the island of maui. Just the other day I had a 7' long reef shark cruise right next to me along the far sid of black rock. (This is a smaller shark, compared to a tiger or great white, and more doscile) The shark bascially checked me out showed me his prescense and took off. Typically, the sharks will do this and they may come back, but if you dont provoke them and make them feel threaghtned they will leave you alone. You should also stay calm and learn to swim or surf w/o making lots of noise and commotion, this resembles a dead fish or animals wich attracts sharks. Aloha, and Mahola, the shark is a hawaiin legend called mano, respect their presence and they will respect yours.

..........yeah and like the guy above said, stay the hell out of the water at night and early in the morning when its still darkness. The sharks feed during these times and your chances of being attacked sky rocket. As an added note stay away from areas where fresh water rivers flow into the open ocean. Many of times dead animals get swept down the rivers current. Tiger sharks will hang out here and eat anything swept into the surf. (No JOke)

depends on where you are..
i'm in florida. from 1959-2003, records say that there have been 425 people struck by lightning in this state, and 466 shark attacks.. so that's not quite true for florida. it's closer to equal. but still.. very few get struck by lightning. :)

ive been surfing for 2years in Ireland, and last summer in Donegal, I saw two basking sharks about 3meters away. they were feeding. It was a brilliant experience

Of course these huge creatures are only plankton feeders so theres no need to be scared. onli 1 dangerous shark has been spotted in newquay, but very far out and alone so not really that danerous.

btw sharks also feed in hazy weather and rainy days
