what are the chances of me getting home in one piece?

I'm taking my pupils ice skating tonight. The last time I went (6yrs ago) I fractured my wrist, the time before that an iceskate went over my thumb and nearly chopped it off. What are the chances of me getting home in one piece tonight?

Positive attitude and staying on the sidelines will keep you safe :D

Or cling to one of the medical staff they have on the ice rink.

I've said absoloutely zero, you can't walk down the street without injuring yourself so i think going ice skating is probably a very serious health risk

thanks for adding that last option cheezee  :D

I made it back, but not in one piece... had a bit of an accident! yes, I think most of you guessed correctly!!!

So here we go
...

We arrived about 4.30pm. There's a class of my kids and a teaching assistant (you have to have no more than 15kids to 1 teacher). I put my ice skates on, and tied up some kids' laces etc. Then I went to put my bag in the locker, cuz you weren't allowed them on the rink. The locker swallowed 2 20p's without me even getting my stuff in. Nevermind, I thought, that's just typical, forget about it.

We all went on the rink - me last. I clung desperately to the edge and it took me a good few minutes to dare move my feet. The kids were all being wonderful and spurring me on! I did a lap surgically attached to the edge. Then, I plucked up the courage to let go. I did two laps inching along with little steps. After that, I thought "this isn't too bad" so I started actually pushing my feet, sliding along and lifting them off the ice for momentum. After about 5 more goes round I felt quite confident and the kids were amazed at my progress.

There was one girl who just didn't have the courage to let go, so I skated upto her (feeling like a pro now!) and took her hand (she's only 12) and led her round. She almost fell over several times, but I stopped her and felt really pleased with myself. after 3/4 laps round the rink, she was smiling and tried having a go on her own. She made it all the way round! I'd done my good deed for the day and felt really warm and fuzzy inside.

The rink was packed with people. THere were little 3yr olds whizzing round on one foot doing twists and turns backwards, and then massive ice hockey players trying to kill each other (without their hockey sticks). I decided that this skating lark wasn't difficult after all (BIG MISTAKE) so tried to improve on each go round.

I was getting more and more confident the more times I got round without falling and I was gliding smoothly. It was all good until I got to a corner and suddenly lost my balance. The last thing I remember was thinking "OH SH*T" as I fell backwards and smacked my head hard on the ice. I was knocked unconscious  The next thing I know, I'm lying on the ice with lots of these people in some awful looking ornage uniform (the staff) surrounding me. I turned my head and saw that they'd got everyone off the rink.

I was panicing about my kids and hoped the assistant was with them. I insisted I was fine, till I got up and saw all the blood. I had worn a white hoodie. It is now red. There was blood all over the rink and me from my head and my arms. I managed to stand up and walk into the first aid room (no fit blokes  :D ) and the second I got there, two paramedics turned up  I thought that was a bit quick, but it turns out they were rung immediately and I was out cold for a good few minutes.

They advised me to go to hospital, as I was answering all their questions wrong.... eg. day of the week & year etc although to me I thought I was right and they were messing with me. I didn't go cuz I knew I was in charge of these kids and it would have totally stressed me out if I'd left them. The kids had to leave early, so I do feel a bit bad, but they were actually really concerned about me  and insisted I get home right away!

I feel absolutely fine now apart from one hell of a headache. got a lift home and decided I'd tell you all about it! I'm going to put my hoodie in the wash and then go to bed! What a day. I just knew something like that was going to happen!!! Maybe I should write a book?

Thaya you've got to be VERY careful with head injuries, if these symptons persist then go to hospital! If you have a mild concussion or more it can creep up on you.

Take it easy, go see the doctor tomorrow, work will understand, and if they don't your leaving any way.

an update... after 2 hours of being sick, my housemate loaded the car up with plastic bags and dragged me to the hospital. The doctor said I had concussion. They put me on an observation ward for the night and I've just got back. I've stopped being sick but my head is pounding. It really scared me when my vision started going. it was like being on drugs or something.

Apparently, some people (like me!) genuinely have thinner skulls than others and are more prone to being knocked unconscious when they hit their head. I was glad to hear that (in a way!) as now I don't feel like such a weirdo

I'm off to bed now. I've just phoned in sick and taken the day off work, which is probably a good idea. I'm dreading all the comments I'm gonna get when I go back on Friday. Thank goodness I'm leaving!!!
