beginner 'shortboarder'....what do you think of this?

Postby Insane Ian » Wed Feb 28, 2007 2:45 am

Hey guys, as the title says, im just getting into shortboarding, and surfing in general.

Long story short, ive tried on a few other shortboards, two just under six feet, and one over. (I did absolutely fine, and picked it up quick) So I have decided im just going to go for a longer shortboard to start with. Do you guys have any suggestions on brands or certain boards? How would something like this be...

Or since I wont be surfing THAT much, and chances are most of the waves im looking at arent going to be that big, should I look more along the lines of a funboard?

Im open for any suggestions, thanks!

Well a funboard is just that super fun in most conditions. So if you are not planning on surfing a great deal then i would go for a funboard.

If your only going to be surfing for a couple of weeks a years,i would say hire a fun board.

But if you want to surf on a regular basic.Go to a decent Surf shop, and talk to someone who actually knows something about surfing. Some surf shops employ people who have not got a clue about surfing, and the people who employ them are only interested in taking your money.

At a decent surf shop, they will take your height and weight and experience into consideration. Please be honest about your surfing abilities.

I have found in the past, you start off with a longer board. And as you get better with your surfing, you work your way down to a shorter board.

I hope my opinion helps?.

Fun board definitely. Check out the Dewey Weber Fastback, Flying Pig or Retro Pig. Good luck.

In my opinion, I would start off on a funboard and work your way up to a shorter board when your comfortable standing and moving about on the funboard.

Good Luck

i think you should stick with the short board but get a wide and thickish board. I think a board 6'2 (since you said you tried a few boards under 6 feet) at 20 1/2 wide and 2 3/4 thick. Easier to paddle than the normal short board and more boyant and forgiving.
Hope this helps!
