Moving to San Francisco, any tips?

Yo yo,

I'm living in south florida right now for the winter season after moving from Chicago (i was in school there. yes, it's cold and the only surf is on a lake. lame.)

So me and my girl have decided to trek it to San Francisco so she can make art and i can go back to school. Living here in So Fla is the first time in years i've lived on a coast, and the waves are pathetic. the only thing barely feasible is hitting up the small shorebreaks wit a skimboard. so i've been doin that a little.

i'm traditionally a sponger (spare me the groans please) and haven't lived in a surfing community in years. is there still a war b/t spongers and surfers? i hope not. anyway, i've been researching surfing in SF and it seems like there's a break or two. can anyone give me a basic rundown of what to expect?

breaks, conditions, atmosphere (localism?), is san francisco worth surfing or do i generally have to head to santa cruz? i'm used to some tropical water here in florida, the water's pretty much always cold there aint it?

San Francisco is a beautiful city, but take bags and bags of cash. It's very expensive. You may want to consider San Diego. Water is warmer, it's not as expensive and there is a thriving art community here as well. Plus, there hasn't been a shark attack in San Diego in a very long time, the Farrallons are supposed to be breeding grounds for the Great White landlords.

Very cold up in No. Cal. More sharks, more attitude. Since you'll be there, just hit Ocean Beach. It's a good stretch of beach break that'll kick your arse if you're not careful. Don't even bother with places like Fort Point or Pleasure or Santa Cruz, etc. you'll get scolded out of the water if you don't surf. Even if you did, you'd still get yelled at until you pay your dues. Good luck and don't forget to bring your 4/3.
