Surfing near Malibu, California

Postby soulvideo » Sat Mar 17, 2007 3:36 am

Hey everyone!

Is anyone on here from anywhere near Malibu? I'm looking for some good places to practice and not get my ass kicked by giant waves, rocks, or really territorial natives. If you're wondering my skill level, I can catch a wave but not quite stand up.

Just moved to Southern California and was given a used board as a gift. I've always loved the ocean but living in the northeast was always way too cold.

You could just pack your board in your car and drive along PCH and see loads of spots without having to leave your car!

I liked this spot in the Ventura/Oxnard area but have since heard its a bit territorial these days so I don't think you could go far wrong if you go to Malibu. Its a really mellow wave ideal for learning on and there's bound to be loads of people in the water so that they all must know and expect beginners to be surfing there too.
Maybe just stay away from the main peak and catch the inside waves until you get a better feel about what is going on by watching everyone else and learning from them.

I tried that today and got yelled at by an older island guy because apparently hanging out there is "in the line of fire," or I guess, where good surfers end up because they ride the wave for so long. Also, I found out you're supposed to paddle towards a guy if you're in his way (in the water) while he's up? So that way he can move around you? That seemed odd to me.

Oh why can't these unwritten rules of surfing be written down somewhere for me ;)

New to the Malibu area

Postby MGAurelius » Wed Mar 28, 2007 9:18 pm

I just moved to the area (near thousand oaks). Looking for some spots to surf and also seeing if anyone would like a surfing partner. I just bought my board yesterday and now I'm hunting for a wetsuit. Ideally would like to surf a spot with minimal crowd, since I'm just learning. Let me know if you are intrested....
