There are many things but here is another one. Don't paddle out directly behind someone that is paddling out.

Don't give up.
I had an awful day yesterday. got my leash wrapped around a rock paddling back in and I couldn't get back above the waves for air. Had to calm down and tell myself not to panic and just reach down and pull the release tab. Was ready to quit!! But had a brilliant day today. I'm still a beginner and there will be more bad days than good in the beginning, but don't give up.

hmmmm a few things:

1) try to surf where there's lifeguards (this has come in handy   )

2) PADDLE PADDLE PADDLE (always useful!)

3) protect your head when you wipeout (I sometimes forget this one and remember when it's too late  !)
