im looking for a quiet but active dog and was wondering what to look for. i want a medium sized dog. at the humane society i saw one that said it was a shih tzu- bulldog terrier mix (i think) but i tried finding it online and couldnt. it looked more like a labreador retriever but not quite. it hat short hair and flappy ears and weighed about 45 pounds. there were a bunch of them. probably a mixed breed...

anyway, what kind of dogs are quiet and mellow and dont bark, have short hair and are medium sized? the one i liked was really quiet at the pound but does that last? is it just overstimulated? like its not an alpha male, so hes quiet over there but at home hed bark all night? i know nothig about dogs. i just want something i can take on hikes and to the beach that wont be loud. my parents would not put up with it.

Labradors and retrievers are mellow pooches .. good with people and kids , not overly active but good fun :D

If not .. then Hamsters

I absoultely love labs. Can't go wrong with one. They're pretty laid back, don't hardly bark at all (unless they REALLY want to)

But they aren't exactly medium sized, but its all good.

I've got what's called a Boykin Spaniel, it's a very small breed out of South Carolina, bred for warm water duck hunting. She's one of the smartest dogs I've seen, but uses her smarts for what we don't really want, haha...

Very energetic, very playful, good with kids, very very friendly, but she gets all excited when people come over and she jumps on them a lot. A bit annoying....but whatever.

But labs are great, my dad used to breed/train/field trial them, so I've been around them my whole life.

My family has had two Boarder Collies. Great dogs.....I dont know about our first one about how loud he was because I was so young. Our second one, was a girl, she was great. Then again, they are pretty energetic, so having them couped up in a house might get troublesome. We live on a farm, so she used to run all the time.

Lhasa Apso or Shitz zhus (sp?) are both really great dogs that are non-allergenic (they don't shed if pure-bred). I like Lhasas the best though as they think most like humans compared to other dog breeds I've seen personally. It's like they speak English and are totally easy to train. I've had two and love them as a breed. They get a max (unless you let them get fat) of about 20-25 lbs. That's a medium to small dog. They are great guard dogs because they were bred to be temple dogs. But, they rarely bark and aren't yappy by any means. They will only really bark if something is lurking about, they've already growled, and you don't seem to be paying attention to what they are trying to tell you about the potential intruder. They are good with kids if you socialize them correctly and same with other animals. Get TWO if at all possible!!!! I would never have just one dog again unless there was no other choice. They need a pack. And, lastly on Lhasas, they are very sensitive so you will have to discipline them with positive reinforcement rather than yelling at them or hitting them. They tend to be stubborn and if you hit them or yell at them they will become bully dogs.

Phew! Don't get anything that even remotely looks like a Jack Russell Terrier, Border Collie, or Beagle if you want a quiet, mellow dog. Trust me!

Don't forget rescue dogs!! The last three I've had have been rescue dogs and were AWESOME dogs! They will also be able to tell you more about their personalities usually if the rescue uses foster homes before placing the dogs. Be really straight with them about things you can handle (training, aggressiveness, potty issues, barking issues) and they will stear you right usually. I have had to take a couple of dogs back before because they had some major issues that they didn't disclose and I wasn't able to handle so now I ask TONS of questions first. The issue was a bizzare-o potty habit one had where it would poop and then the other one would come behind it and eat it to keep it from getting in trouble. I kept finding strange poop crumbs everywhere. It freaked me out big time but I wasn't able to resolve it. I'm not the Dog Whisperer by any means. Basic potty training is one thing but that was, well, weird and the dogs were nuts too. So, go the rescue dog route but ask lots and lots of q's!!

Mine's a little (allegedly) springer spaniel crossed with a lakeland terrier. Reckon there is some Staffordshire bull terrier in her too though. I bought her off some really dodgy guy in Hartlepool :?

My dog Duke died nearly 2 years ago and his dad was a boarder collie and his mum was a lab retriever. Duke was the most well behaved awesomess dog ever. He was well trained and if he did bark it would be for a reason and he would shut up when you asked him to. i think you should go for a mixed bred dog... they're different, Duke was like a fox colour but a lil darker. He was gorgeous :D

I've always seen shitzu's to be rather yippy and they seem really ego-tistical for being a dog

Always wanting to fight, but they'll obviously lose.....I know they might have more fight in them, but laws of physics takes over after a while.

Is that a german shepard? One of my friends has one, and I used to be cool with, but then it got really protective, and since then has attacked me twice......I think it's starting to get used to me again though. The other day I was walking out of their house and I had what seemed like a 10 minute stare down with it. I would move, it would growl/move closer, and eventually I just stood there and it walked off.

bring it with me of course. im really outdoorsy and i need some company. i guess ill have to find a pet friendly place then.

the dogs i liked looked most like lab. retrievers, but not quite. they were smaller. maybe with some bulldog mixed in? but they certainly did not look like bulldogs. i still cant find a picture on google.

heres what im thinking

1. physical features (about 45 pounds, short hair and pretty face)
2. doesnt bark at other dogs in the kennel
3. doesnt lick my hand every time, and sniffs it instead
4. friendly but not too jumpy
5. not drueling
6. doesnt pull me when walking, but walks at my side

I almost recently got a Leonberger, HUGE! Decided a dog doesnt currently fit in with our life in NZ so will have to wait a bit longer.

no drooling? Ive never owned a dog but from friends and stuff the ones that seem to drool have very square jaws like a Boxers or stafordshire bull terriers (altough not so much with the staffie until they get old). Ive always liked the English sheep dogs, dont know what they're called...collie? or something like that - very inteligent and active - need a lot of exercise though. I love Huskies but cant see them being very comfortable in Hawaii!!

I know someone who has huskies and they have to get their undercoat blown out by this special dog groomer person or something. Apparently the dogs are close to miserable in our summers, which are eh....85-95 with very high humidity. The winters they like (obviously)

My dog doesn't drool. Don't know what makes a dog drool and what doesn't.....

And it pulling you when you walk is all about the training. The more you walk them the less they'll want to do that.

And I don't know about licking, I really don't care if they lick me, it just means they like you
