Newquay

I'm heading down to Newquay for the first time as I ususally stop at Croyde/Saunton and stay there.
Is it true that there is fierce localism at Fistral, or is this just bravado hype?
Also anyone have any recommendations for better, less crowded beaches with less hassle in the area?
How busy do you thnk it will be at Easter?

Any help would be great.

I've never had that problem when I've gone down there, in fact made friends in Newquay.

I think if your surfing in a group it will be different, I'm normally just with one or two friends. As long as you don't drop in, and have respect you should enjoy it!

If it's really crowded, particularly holidays, find somewhere within a few miles that's not as crowded. Usually when I go it's Nov to March so not as busy anyway!

it doesnt get localism, apart from that guy who slashed my tyres and threw a brick at my head. but i think he just had an attitude problem

Newquay in general gets so many visitors, the locals don't tend to surf the town beaches much. You don't get any localism there really.

If you head to some of the less crowded, good breaks, you'll probably get more localism there!!

I'll probs head around to different beaches instead of sticking to Fistral for a week.
I think you guys ar probably right, as long as you stay out of most locals' way they'll be cool about you surfin there.
I had just read around someplaces that over the last years Newqua ha become a bit of a s***hole.
Anyway, I'm sure it'll be a good trip.

Unfortunately Newquay used to be packed with Surfers only and had a really good vibe, now it's a bit of a haven for Stag/ Hen nights with 'lads on the p*ss' which has spoiled it a lot!

I would recommend Perranporth because it's big and the waves often shape nicely. Because of it's size it rarely gets too crowded.

take a look at www.beachwizard.com, it'll give you an idea of lots of breaks to try around there.

I heard Newquays a really kool place to go with really nice people around it. Its our kind of place really, surfing capital of England

Yeah I thought Perranporth looked good.
I figured I'd get up go for an early sesh at Fistral and head somewhere else in the afternoon.
That way I can check out the area.

What do you guys think of Watergate Bay, apparently its pretty mellow and weak, and Gwithian down further south?

watergate bay mellow and week? ive seen it barreling perfectly.

the north end of gwithian is quite hollow the south end is more mellow

as for avoiding locals in a place like newquay its hard to tell whos local or not theres that many that surf it, just go out and surf dont worry about it

when you going to be down im normaly about around north cornwall

Sennen Cove at Land's End is my all-time favourite place to surf. The water is crystal clear and the waves wrap around the headland so at one end of the beach you get 2 ft and the other end is 8ft - just pick your size!

Fistral is, in my humble opinion, massively overrated!

i stopped outside watergate bay hotel last weekend on the way to newquay, surf was quite impressive, i was soooo dying to get in!

Sennen is the bee's knees! I go there with a mate every year for 2-3 weeks. Good points include: Nice folk, nice beach, consistent surf, no one's there for the night-life, basking sharks, Whitesands Lodge, the First and Last...etc etc...
