Wow, that actually worked. I thought with surfing I may just think "I know  " but I have a sudden surge of determination (think its adrenaline)- Im not sure that is entirely normal behaviour - but hey it works! :D

Okay, now we know how to do it - instead of shouting 'paddle! go go go!' like last time, we'll shout 'Hey Sar! You're a wuss! You'll never catch this one!'

I read somwhere that you are far more likley to go through with something if you tell people your goal. Something about being subconciously commited to it....

When I lived in British Columbia(westernmost province in Canada), I used to ski ALOT(like 60-70 days a year). I had alot of friends that were scared to do things, like hit a new bigger jump, or jump a bigger cliff. It is all about risk managment, and thinking of what the bennifits are vs the risks...

For you, you will be a much more vesatile surfer, with the ability to surf more often into bigger surf. This will give you more confidence, and make your experiance more enjoyable. Vs, the option of trying to make the drop you could bail....get held under for a few seconds...then pop back up(again assuming you arn't surfing a break that is ridiculously shallow).

Like was said, dont hold back, no hesitaion. My first time in big waves...was my 5 time surfing...I was into 5-6ft steep waves...I ate it hard trying to make the drop...like every time for about a day...then the next day it was still big, so I went out again, and I ate it trying for a while...then I made the drop....it was so worth it. Mind you the wave closed out on me....but i still made the drop. It is all about little victories that makes you want to keep going...Oh and Sar i dont think anyone mentioned it....but for sure dont give up on surfing....

What are you afraid of? That's not meant to be mean, I mean what are you ACTUALLY afraid of. Is it the fact that you might 'fall'? hitting the water? Getting worked afterwards?

Because, you've probably had all of these happen to you already, and you're still here (and still stoked by the sound of it).

You only need to do it once. It's like dropping into a half pipe on a skateboard. The first time is terrifying, but then you get the rush. I have to say in my opinion, the rush of making your first drop on a wave (however small) is much better than the half pipe.

Once you've had that rush, you'll know what I mean. You'll want to do it again and again and again and the fear will turn into a yearning.

Trust me, I'm a doctor!

You're not being mean I know that. The bit Im scared of is getting worked afterwards. The rocks and deep water wernt as intimidating as I expected them to be at all and thougt as long as Ive got the strangth to paddle away from the rocks I'll be fine- I knew there were 2 guys watching my back anyway :D

Its when I get to the top of the wave it just looks so high and I know/think I wont make it. I dont think Im gonna make it when I paddle for it in the first place :? but when I get to the top I just think 'ooh no, no way i'll get up in time for that' even on fat wedgy waves where there isnt much of a drop. Notice the over use of the word 'think' there?!?

My pop up is too slow and having not really tried and learnt from experience I dont know at which point im sposed to pop up. Im practicing pop ups now so next time I'll be able to do it quick enough and go for it!! :D

Sar - with popups speed isnt always the issue, its starting it soon enough & doing it smooth. Ok you cant take all day but you do usualy have 'enough' time.

I shall remember that so thank you! Like I said though..Its more of a 'struggle up' than a 'pop up' and I know it which is why I dont commit at all. I am working on it, but Im a complete slacker so if I dont keep practising I'll be posting the same issue in a few months time  Sorry, not proud just the way it is. I am going to print batmans post 'I bet you cant do it' up everywhere to keep me going

Or thinking about conservation issues recently maybe I'll just make it a screensaver!! :D :D

try to go on really small waves, waves that are big enough to push you but thats it.
your probably gonna have to build up.
Definitly practise popups in your bathtub (dont ask)
and then, once your on a wave, even if its whitewater, do the exact same thing as you where doing on the floor.
when your on the board in whitewater, position yourself, tell yourself, do exactly what i did in my living room, one motion.
then go for it!

Mwhahaha in your face Batman!!

I did it!!

Twice!! :D :D :woot: :woot:

Went to Saunton today for strong offshore winds and was advised that I would have to take the steeper waves and later to avoid being blown back  but with words of "encouragement" - ie "theres no way you'll do it Sar" and :yearght: signs once I put the ear plugs in from DBB I was motivated..................and caught 2 unbroken waves - one was witnessed and the other my leash was wrapped around my leading leg so I had to quit - but I did it!! I DID IT!!

Cheers for the info and support all.

Not sure there was an actual 'drop' and I fell off fairly quickly but I was on long enough for the wave to accelerate the board and for me to feel very pleased :D :woot: :woot: :woot:

I can confirm that with words of encouragement and the odd hand signal as motivation, Sar did indeed catch an unbroken wave and fly down the face of it :D
