What would a fair offer be for this board?

A good friend of mine is offering for me to by his board. Actually I offered to buy it from him because its been sitting in his closet for a decade and I'm dying to get my hands on one for cheap.

Its a late 1980's/early 1990's... 5'11'' Gordon and Smith (Hank Warner model?). It has nose guard, leash, grip tape for back foot (or whatever you call it). 2 fins.
Has a few dings and a crack near the tail he said (not sure of the severity of the crack though). He's going to send me some pictures pretty soon.

My friend bought it from some guy in college way back in 1993, tried surfing once and never tried again. I doubt he paid the guy more than $200 for it but I could be wrong. I currently don't own a board at all and my friend never uses this one at all so I thought it would be a perfect low cost opportunity (forget the fact that a shortboard isn't right for me...I'll be happy with anything at this point if its cheap).

So what should I offer him without insulting him?

Friend doesn't have a digital camara so I might get pictures in the mail. He said he'd try to borrow a dig. camera from a neighbor though and email pics to me. If I can get them digital format, I'll post them.

Can anyone give me some high/low estimates here at least before seeing the board?

I was thinking $50...and I can throw in the option that he is more than welcome to borrow it whenever he wants!

First see what he was going to offer it for, then if it's too high then offer $50.

if it has a crack, chances are water got in the foam, and this will really damage the board..best thing is to see it in person, try it out, or better yet, just tell him to give you the board, he doesnt use it anyway

As its going to be no use to you whatsoever and will probably live in your closet for a few years, I'd go with the zero dollars option too.

Boards like that should be traded for free

I guess he main issue is the crack in the tail. Can a crack be fixed or is the board pretty much worthless if it has a crack in it? I can probably get me bro-in-law to repair it if those sorts of things are repairable. I'll keep everyone posted. If the crack is severe and the board is un-ridable, I won't take it for free. It will just take up space in my basement.

depends on how bad the crack is. if you have a good surf shop around theyll probably know how to fix it. you can fix a board thats been broken in half, you can fix a crack lol. and about the water getting in the foam, my experience has been that as long as its been out of the water once the water has gotten in the foam, and given enough time to dry out (which seems to be the case as its sat in a closet) it can be repaired and will be just fine .
