Surf in Croatia?

Postby Skel » Sun Mar 04, 2007 2:13 pm

Does anyone know if this place gets any half-decent surf?

I think 'no' about covers it.

Never been there to surf (obviously) although I have been there. Not only is it in the adriatic/med (which occasionally gets real surf - Israel has a had a winter of almost consistent overhead waves... weirdness...) but croatia is blocked by italy from getting any swell. So there'll only be very local wind swell.

Basically, crap.

Well... Yes and no.

Swells are produecd travling up the channle between Croatia and Italy but they are usually lump windswell lacking in power.

Watch for tight system passing accross southen italy producing the most distance of fetch. Anythign that will produce any size needs to produce a surge up the channle and unfotunatly weatehr systems dont often travel in that manor up the channle in that way. They usually pass accross.

Google for weater/pressure charts over the easter med... Watch and wait! Just doing expect anyting much more than a few foot of slop on average.

Because your in the Adriatic, not the Med, like PW said its a bit unlikely apart from the odd day here and there.

Your best bet to score more consistent waves is the West Coast of Italy, I have family out their and sometimes the swells are more regular than the UK.

You can surf in Croatia, on the island of Brac and also near Hvar. Back in 1989 I saw ok waves and again in 2002 on a repeat visit, lots of kitesurfing and windsurfing going on as well now. Waves do exist they are not huge but if there is a will and a desire you can catch some swell.

Hope that helps... search out and you will find, thats the motto of all true surf travellers.
