recycling

Postby hawaiiSUCKSexceptsurf » Wed Feb 14, 2007 1:09 am

how is recycling elsewhere (uk. au, etc)
here i cringe when i see people throwing cans and bottles away in trash bins literally 3 feet away from a recycle bin. AT A UNIVERSITY. environmental things wont get better here because most indivduals couldnt care less. we need environmental education in gradeschool. is it different elsewhere?

Not really. In the UK its up to local authority to provide recyclng facilities, so it varies hugely across counties, even just between villages. It has improved alot though. At my parents house we have 3 wheely bins and a blue box, on bin is for landfill, one for paper and card, one for compost and the box is for plastic and glass.

Here in Norwich we have blue boxes for paper and glass but plastic and tins either get thrown out or taken to the nearest public recycling bins....The Green Party in Norwich is lobbying for better recycling at the moment and they have quite a bit of power in Norwich (well relatively anyway) so hopeuflly they will improve it.

where I live the recycling is ok - we have a wheelie bin for all recycling stuff. We fill it up all the time but we've always recycled - there will be people who wouldnt have bothered before and all their rubbish would have been burnt or put in a landfil so a definate improvement.

The thing I hate is at work where even though we now have recycling bins people are too lazy to use them and chuck paper, plastics and cans in the bins under their desk. I think they may believe Im a little crazy but I have a pop at them every time I see it and make them take it out and put it in recycling. Before we had the recycling bins I used to take the cans and bottles home for them at the end of each day to put to recycling.

My folks get given various big plastic crates for paper, glass, plastic, tin etc, which get collected every coupla weeks or so by the council. Great!!! :D

Here, we have recycling bins in the local car park, and everyone has to sort and recycle their own stuff. Not so great, as most people just don't bother.

We put out like a 60 gallon wheely thinger slam packed and a bin or two every two weeks when they pick stuff up. Pretty much but all the bottles, glass, paper, cardboard, etc in there.

So recycling is provided, for free, pick up every other week on a given day. However, trash collection you gotta pay for (at least where I live, in the city it's provided)

we get 3-110 gallon bins at home, one for trash, one for yard waste, and one for recyclables, in CA within a few years every city must be diverting at least 50% of waste from land fills, based on amounts from some time in the 1990s. The recycle bin gets sent to be recycled, the yard waste turned into muclh, and the trash goes to the dump.
I did notice that there seems to be very little blatent recycling in Hawaii, one of the places that could use it the most. :?

Yeah, I guess how much our state recycles doesn't matter too much, because VA imports the most trash than any other state in the country.....it sucks. And we don't tax it enough.

So whenever I see a truck with an aluminum rag top trailer with a bunch of dings in it from a populated state, I give them a nice friendly sign.

It's wierd, we get one big ass wheely bin for landfill rubbish, and three big boxes. One for paper and card, one for plastic, and one for aluminium and glass.

What's wierd, it 2 miles down the road, they just get a wheely bin that they stick everything in - no recycling, but they're in a different local council area.

Just down the street is another city, less than a block away. The residents just put out trash on trash day, and the collection company then sorts and recycles what can be recycled, residents don't have to sort anything, but stuff still gets recycled.
