better surf college: Charleston, Sc or Flagler, FL

Postby surfsc77 » Wed Feb 07, 2007 1:30 am

I've narrowed the colleges i want to go to down to two. I live closer to charleston and i really like surfing there, but ive heard how great flagler is for surfing. They are both gonna cost about the same, so which one should i go too? the washout is a really nice surf spot, but ive seen pictures of St. Augustine going off. which one would you go to?

Here's another choice you may wish to consider, University of California San Diego, nice weather year round, not far from a great beach, and it has all kinds of great educational programs. But that's just my Southern California predjudice, I didn't go there, but it's the best looking and closest to beach school that i have seen.

I live in St. Augustine. Yeah it gets good at times. These are from a hurricane swell. The hurricane stayed well off shore, all we got were the waves.

I graduated from San Diego State U. many years ago. San Diego was a great place to grow up, surf and live. You cann't beat Socal for overal wave strenght and quality, unless you go to Hawaii. I now live in North Central FL and surf Flagler Beach whenever I get a chance. It isn't even close to CA, but sometimes there are rideable waves.

If I was you, I'd go west young man.

thats no where. even here in hawaii the south shore has been flat for 2 months atleast, and most surfers work or school and dont have time to go to the north or west shore where there is surf. during the summer there could be only 1-2ft surf on all shores for a month or two.

well i take it back. if youre used to the ocean being like a pond, hawaiis reef breaks are constant. but they are shallow, sharp, and only about 2-3 feet from the face. to me thats not worth it, but im probably jaded.

Keep in mind that at CofC you can drive north to OBX a whole lot easier. Plus, the ratio of guys to girls is like 1:10.....bring on da ladiess :D

No I don't, but I'm also looking for colleges, and have weighed all the options.

I have no idea where I want to go though

Yeah, I think I will end up at college in the mountains vs. the beach. Not because I like one more than the other, but generally the schools in the mountains tend to be better, and as much as I'd like to go to school just to surf, I'm going for an education :(

Oh well. I'm a much better skier than I am surfer, so I could probably race on the school team.

my parents arent really happy with me going to college with surf nearby, they think im gonna waste all my time surfing. i dont really care though lol.i think ill still get a good education at either college, their both rated fairly well. if i didnt care about my education at all and just wanted to go to a surf college id go to australla (sp) and major in board sports lol.

yea its a big responsibility to juggle school with surfing. Im a freshman this year and during the fall id drive down to the beach about 2 hours away...the work catches up with you so just keep your prorities in mind.

Yeah, I definately think that CofC is one of the best schools that is right on the water. Although I've already thought it out if I end up going to somewhere very close to the water--I'm gonna have to go like 3 months early and get acclimated to being so close to the water, so then I'll take it for granted and won't be so tempted to go surf instead of study.

Charelston has better surf, because of the little reef, folly beach! Plus UCSD would be awesome to go to and its a great school and you'd have HB there, but its pretty hard to get into. The cost of living in Charelston is cheaper too!
