shin splints???

Postby IdRatherBeSurfing » Thu Feb 01, 2007 7:24 pm

Ive got some of these badboys from running  any advice as how to get them to cool down? Nice lady at pharmacy said to take ibuprofen for inflammation, then totally rest them.

Am gutted, cos I was really starting to see an improvement on the fat-loss side of things  . I am going to start cycling or swimming every day now instead of running, but I prefer running as I feel Ive had a better workout than I do when I'm in the pool.

From depressed of Aberystwyth

Just gotta treat em and work through em. Table some advil, soak in epson salts, and keep running.

Used to get them all the time in soccer growing up, but mostly because I hadn't run for awhile. But couldn't not run in practice every day. They eventually go away.

Ice, ice, ice. Get a small paper cup, fill with water, place in freezer until frozen. Remove cup, tear off some of the paper leaving enough so that you can hold the paper rather than the ice. Use this to massage the shins for about 5-10 minutes. This helped when I had similar issues from running.

I don't like running, not because of the aerobic part, just how hard it is on the joints.

It took me a while to see how good of a work out I got from swimming. I don't particurally immediately notice it because I don't see sweat pouring off my face (but it is, take a good taste of the water next time :P )

And biking machines I don't feel like I get as good of an exercise. Real bikes I feel it though.

Do you mean like the spin bikes? or the ones that tend to be in the weight room. If you want a killer workout, take a spin class.

Swimming, you normally are sweating like crazy, but you dont notice it because you are all wet.

Once you've got rid of the current swelling - get to a proper running shop and get some proper running shoes. If they're a good shop they might even ask you to run up and down a bit to see what you're doing wrong

And run on grass, not tarmac.

But going swimming would be simpler

Too much too soon! but some people are more prone to getting shin splints than others.

Could be that your running shoes are not giving you enough cushioning when you run. There are loads of different running shoes designed for different people.

Depends on your weight and running style.

If you are serious about running would be worth buying a pair just to use for running and nothing else. Go to a proper running shop and they will sort you out and tell you the best for your weight/ style of running. And you can pick up a good pair for alot less than you think.
