Looking for another board

Postby OCSurfer » Wed Feb 11, 2004 10:03 pm

Sup bras
Ive been surfing for a little over 1 summer now (we have a beach house down in South Jersey) and I have a 6'8 Turbeville short board. I can turn into the waves fairly well but I have serious problems ripping and duck diving. I think thats becasue of the size of my board. Is it? Anyway Im looking to buy another short board because of that. But I'm not sure exactly what size I should get and what kind. I would say I'm over begginner but I wouldnt quite say I'm intermediate. I'm 5'1 and about 100 lbs. Thanks if you could help thatd be sweet

New surfboard choice

Hi Mahalo, welcome to Surfing Waves.

You are quite light at 100lbs so this may contribute towards your duckdiving problem. If you weighed twice as much you would find that board would sink much easier!
Your size means that you can get on a smaller shortboard if you want, and even though you are not quite an intermediate surfer you can probably go down to 6'0'' if you really wanted. You still want the board to be at least 18 3/4 thick. You will find that you should be able to sink this board in the duckdive without a problem, and you should also be able to throw this board around in the waves.
Hope this helps, anyone else care to comment on the choice of surfboard?

Thanks alot for the advice. I've been thinking about trying to save up for an Al Merick board. What do you think about that? What other brands should I consider buying? Oh and by the way, I've been looking around some of the posts... Im from New Jersey, What the heck is a stone?(weight wise)

Al Merick and Stones

Postby surf patrol » Thu Feb 12, 2004 8:48 am

Al Merick boards are pretty good from what I can tell. There are plenty of boards out there to buy - most of the rack of your local surf shop will be ok. Ask around your area for any hot shapers.

As for stones, I guess that is the problem of having an international site. I guess we should all be talking in metric and we could forget about stones, pounds and ounces. 1 stone = 14 pounds = 6.35 kilos
