If I can't find a summer internship in Hawaii I am thinking about just taking off to somewhere cheap and surfing as much as possible. Where would you go?

Mexico. Cheap living and some good surf.

Now that I am older and have money, I just can't bring myself to stay in those cheaper accomidations. They sure were fun when I was in my early 20 however.

BALI

For 10 bucks a day you'll pay for your hotel (Inc breakfast) and 2 square meals a day.

For 20 bucks a day you'll live like a king 8)

Well Costa Rica is not cheap compared to Mexico or Nicaragua! The waves are great, but if you wnat to travel and surf for a long time with very little money its not the place anymore. It can be done, but you would have to try very hard to be frugal with your money. In Mexico and Nicaragua you have a hard time spending money its so cheap! If you give me a thousand dollars to go on a surf trip, I could make it last a few weeks in costa rica, in Mexico or Nicaragua I could make $1000 last for months!

Yes, but in large parts of mexico and nicaragua you run the risk of being skull fleshed in your sleep by deranged (and armed) locals...

In 2005 I met a guy in Samara, CR, he was from california, he had rented a house a half mile down the beach for $100 a month, was spending about $150 a month on food and booze. He walked everywhere and surfed most of the day. He was staying for 6 months.
That may not be as cheap as Nicaragua or Mexico, true, but to me that is pretty cheap :D
I guess it's all what you are used to. But I will agree with you, CR is more expensive than it was in the past.
ANd I haven't been to Nicaragua yet, but I still like being in CR way better than Mexico. Much better feel to it.
