Branded clothing

Postby derbyshire surfer » Fri Jan 26, 2007 6:19 pm

Hi,

Just something that's got me thinking... :?

I've been surfing a few years, mainly weekends as I'm landlocked but I love it. Just recently I've come across a bit of a situation. A guy who is a good surfer was laughed at for wearing 'normal' clothes??? i.e not a surfing brand. I think he had just gone straight from work, (office I beleive), just seemed a bit of a strange way to act?

I know we expect named brands to sell their latest range in surf mags, and in landlocked areas 'surfing or board' shops don't sell surf equipment because clothing is so popular. Just wondering if this was a bit 'uncalled for' as someone implied he didn't 'look like a surfer'?

I wear brands, albiet normally reduced in sales etc. I'm just plain tight with my money! Do you think sometimes we get caught up in the way we look instead of the way we surf? Sorry not meant to be a too deep question!

Happy riding!

How strange :?

I think most surfers are far more likely to be laughing at the non-surfing fat chav in newquay in head-to-toe billabong

My thoughts exactly...maybe the guys laughing weren't that good? Obviously narrow minded!

they laughed at him?? - thats ridiculous, what so he has to 'look' like a surfer 24/7?

What I think is silly is people who buy all the gear just to look like the stereotype of a surfer and never dipping a toe in the water, by all means buy what you like, if you like surf branded stuff then buy it - but not to portray an image that isnt you - get my meaning? No? - ok, well anyone remember the friends were Joey dresses head to toe in ferrari gear to look like he owns a ferrari? - that is what i mean.

Someone on here once mentioned a couple of girls they saw on the beach in full Roxy (i think gear) who wouldn't go in the sea cos their boards would get wet....

Hmmm...

I don't normally look like a surfer...just a mess!

I think the 'messy' look seems to come naturally to me! Especially on a week long trip! lol Nothing like sand to hold the hair in place!

They must of been a bunch of kooks. I have arrived at the beach in a suite and tie. I had a littel bit of free time and I was going to take advantage of it. I could care less what the others think. I don't surf becuase it is the cool thing to do, I surf becuase I love it. I really don't care if someone labels me as a surfer or not. That very attitude is what it is all about. Not carring what others think and just going out and having a blast.

Live and love life.

cough, cough, i sell hardware in my landlocked shop, and it goes down pretty well, i can even offer a custom board built to your own specs, but perhaps that thats cos i'm a surfer and a lot of other shops are just lifestyle stores.

Surfing is about surfing not wearing surf clothes or having a stereotyped haircut. I admit that i own a lot of surf brand clothing, but thats not what surfing is about. I like my Lost and Volcom T's, but it doesnt make me any more of a surfer than someone who shows up to the break in a shirt and tie.

If you could tell me the address (pm if you like?) I'll get over some time. Or if there's a web link or something. Just up the road so I could get over on a day off.

Do you have any boards in stock at the moment?

pssssht what's their problem? I sometimes go to the beach still in uniform when I'm in a hurry... nobody tells me anything.

I do wear surf branded clothing when I'm not wearing my uniform (most of the time) but I honestly don't think it matters what anyone wears, as long as it's not burberry, please never wear burberry or anything chavvy! The day I see boy racers heading down to the beach and getting into burberry wetties is the day I stop surfing in England

do you no what bugs me... when people act like surfers when they don't have a clue about it... it bugs me so much. My mates drive me crazy... it's like if you want to be a surfer put the bloody effort and go learn not just act like it to get a 'surfer dude' or and 'skater dude'
it really does bug me lol.

do you think that's harsh of me?

not harsh at all,

my mates (who are learning to surf) are a bit odd... instead of wearing surf brand clothes everywhere, they actively avoid looking too much like a surfer because they figure it's posing. fair enuff, but I'm still happy to show that I'm trying to surf by wearing surf clothes.

Oh yeh, and in australia most people wear billabong/roxy/surf brands because that's what most shops stock. You can pick the real surfers because their clothes are faded and torn at the hems.

is that good thing? lol
it's just frustrating lol... and my mates no it pisses me off because i changed my name to 'are you a surfer or a poser' on msn and they said 'is that aimed at me' i was 'yes' lol. but they still do it. lol
