Once when I was coming in, a school of fish jumped out about 100 of the little suckers landed on my board and flopped around.

That is so cute!!!! I hope something like that happens to me. Steve (husband) was telling me he could see a sea lion chasing me off my board and me running back to shore in a panic....

If i saw a shark id probably just die on the spot, but i live in Ireland so its grand cos theyre like 10 miles off shore and mainly blue sharks. Ive just seen seals popping up close to us.

Almost stepped on a 2-3'-ish sand shark while surfing once. Looked down and there it was just as clear as day. That was in the Mission Beach area. Saw another there on another trip. Something weird bumped up against my thigh on that trip too. It felt like the size of my 20 lb. dog. That was a little scary as I looked around and couldn't quite figure out what it was.

I grew up going to Florida and my mother would not let us go any deeper than knee-deep even though we were all excellent swimmers. She was convinced the sharks would get us. Now that I'm learning to surf, I'm readjusting my attitude to the whole shark thing. Spent alot of time looking up stats and stuff just to get a handle on how big a threat it really is and figured out it is so small I'm going to just surf and have fun and let God worry about the details! I also looked around at how many people are out there every day without incident and that seemed reassuring too. I think basically any time you are in the ocean there is something "fishy" about so learning that they really don't want to eat me was kinda important to getting over the fear of them. Now, I'm just kinda amazed that I kept surfing after seeing sharks. My mom is coming around a little too after several talks. I think she was just caring for her wee ones and besides, the movie Jaws had just come out when I was a kid and it must have scared the bageezus out of her. We actually went down to see part of Jaws II being made and the mechanical shark was huge up on a tractor trailer! She must have had nightmares about that sucker! So, she's being pretty supportive about surfing especially since it has replaced my passion for skydiving!! LOL! My poor parents never know what I'm going to call them with next!

I had a seal pop it's head up and just kind of stare at me for a while at Cayton Bay. He got on this wicked wave and while I was watching....it landed on my head!!! (the wave not the seal!) lol
