Magic Carpets

Hi,

I'm planning on a trip to Cornwall at the start of Feb with the aim to buying a Magic Carpet board.

I've been surfing 4 or 5 years (mainly weekends, living in Derbyshire). I've used a shortboard 6'7, a minmal 7'6, and a 9ft board. I'm looking at either the 7'10 or 7'6 carpet made by Escape. Need something with a longboard shape that can still be noseridden. The guy from Escape, Bill, has been really knowledgeable, and I'm ready to go spend my hard earned £'s, just wondering if anyone else has had experience of 'Escape' surfboards?

They also do a 7'2 and a 7'6, just thought a 7'10 would be better for nose riding, or is that not always the case?

There will be no nose riding on a 7'10".....*

For nose riding, the smallest you'll see is 9'0".









In very rare circumstances, any board can somehow be locked in and you can nose ride....but that just takes a weird act of physics....I don't even know how.

These magic carpets are basically 'shortened' longboards, they still have the same nose as a long board.
I don't know about you're 9 plus theory? I've been using a 'hired BIC 8'4' while saving for my custom board and I've found it real easy to nose ride!

Its not just the nose that aids nose riding its the tail rocker. True nose riding longboards have masses of tail rocker which produces lots of lift and drag and effectively sucks the tail of the board into the wave.
A magic carpet has a very flat tail rocker for speed and so is not designed for nose riding.
But as tomcat says any board can be nose riden and ive got most of the way upto the nose on my 7ft magic carpet but more by fluke than design.
Ive seen photos of bo young riding a wombat (basically a 6ft 2 longboard) nose riding in the tube, but i guess bo young could probaly nose ride an ironing board if he wanted.

noes riding on longboards is about geting that tail tucked under the wash or into the wave so its got weight on it, well thats how i do it any way( well try to). Noes riding a board under 9' is very hard, if i was you i would try to decide what you want, you can either longboard and do noes rides, or you can ride a mini mal / shortboard. i got myself a performancyish longboard so i can move it easy, but iv now got myself a 6'6" bilbo and iv fallen in love with it but i still think of my self as a longboarder, so you can do both, but i wouldn't go swapping between then until your a decent surfer.

if you want a short longboard go for the mullet by guts, i cant remember the site, but all it is is a longboard with the middle cut out, dont know if it can be noesridden tho.

I think you will find that there isn't really a minimum length for a nose rider... Its just common sence to have a board lets say greater then 9'3" with more tail then nose rocker if nose riding is what you put a focus on... I will just look for a recent thread of Sway's to open your head a bit more.
