Tomcat that sounds like an awesome idea. Even just to see the area. The wife and I have taken the motorbike down there a couple of times and it is beautiful. Totally worth going. She has an aunt in Salem Oregon so we ride to there, use them as a home base and go check out everywhere. Haven't surfed out there yet because of the time constraints but it looks great. Mount Hood is HUGE.
You should try telemark. If you ski you would pick it up easy. Way more fun and endless possibilties of places to go, once you find some public snowy places of course. :D

Just curious, how does telemark open you up to more possibilities? I definately think I should get that down on my home slopes before trying it in the back country.

And on telemarks, you pretty much never release when you fall, right?

I also think it would be a good idea to take an avalanche class or something before going out there, but I think in June it shouldn't be too bad.

You can go more places with skis than snowshoes. Plus, snowshoe bindings don't fit very well over boots so sometimes you have to change your footwear once on top. At least i had to when I would take my board into the backcountry. Backcountry touring is great on skis. Not so great with snowshoes and board. You can't glide down the short hills on your shoes and you can't climb or walk on your board.
It's easier to ski on flats or climb up hills with free heel and boots with flex compared to a set heel or alpine boots that don't flex. I've tried them both and telemarking is the way to see new country.
It is a little more difficult to turn, especially with a pack and deep powder, but that just gives you something to work on. :)
I took some lessons and rented equipment. Took the lessons at a local hill. After I got the hang of it I tried some small stuff by my house. Then I called up a friend and off we went and tackled a local mountain. Oh, and I did take an avalanche course and rented the beacons. That I feel is a wise investment.
And yes, you never release when you wipe out. But most of the time you just fall forward because you lose your balance because your heels are loose.
