Concaves

Postby IDynamite » Tue Jan 09, 2007 9:05 pm

Im currently working with a local shaper for a new shortboard. Is anyone experimenting with different types of concave designs? I've read that a double concave in the center of the board to a single concave in the tail is optimal for quick turns and support, anyone know of some other designs I should look into?

Are you talking about bottom concaves?

I have done a front concave to flat to vee in the tail, works very well, good turning in the tail due to the vee and you get a gas pedal effects from the concave.

There are rail channels, vees, spiral vees, etc, etc....

look on swaylocks

i think the double concave in the tail going to single in the nose helps for speed forces the water down the board and past the fins at the back allowing the water to move faster under the board

How'd I forget, that's the typical shortboard concave right now.

Splits right before the fins.

Ahh i see.
You say you read about double to single concave giving responsiveness. Ive never heard of boards being that way round. Plenty of boards going from a single to double but not double to single, i'm pretty sure what ur suggesting would actually make it harder to turn, im not sure if it would slow it down.

so you would say the single concaves relate more to responsiveness and the double with stability?

Nope that's not what im saying. I'm saying that a double to single is a bad combination of bottom contours.
When you put more than one type of contour on the bottom of a board you should be looking at how they will effect the flow of water across the bottom of the board as a group rather than as individual components. Your shaper will know this.

Im looking for a board that has a lot of stability but doesnt sacrifice speed and responsiveness as well as a board that isnt gonna be too hard to paddel. Ideas?
