Winter surfing

Postby Stone Fox » Fri Jan 05, 2007 8:16 am

Ok, being in the water wouldn't be bad thanks to the wonders of neoprene, but the bit I don't like the idea of is getting out, and taking the wetsuit off in the freezing cold.

Comments? Suggestions?

Yeah that right....but remember to wear fairly tight fitting boxers that don't come off with your wetsuit.

which has never happened to me....never!

Straight down with the top half, quick dry, put on big fat coat and beanie.
Hot cuppa til the shakes have stopped and you've warmed through a bit, then tackle the lower half.

Or as DBBB said get a van

Take a thermo flask with you or a bottle of hot water wrapped up in a towel. If it is really really cold then I sometimes lay my towels out over my car seats and floor and just change in the car. Its works ok.

The only time it bothers me changing outside, is when it rains or is hail stoning, otherwise just get on with it.

You're a Geordie, your opinion on what constitutes "cold" doesnt count!

Get changed in stages and put a hat on the minute you get to the car.
when you take the top 1/2 of your wetty off whack a fleece straight on(preferably a windcheeter) that way youve got time to faff about with bootys and getting the wetsuit over your feet.

I find when its really cold I lose all shame and am quite happy not to worry about a towel covering me.

You must have hands of steel. My hands were cold while wearing gloves. But I do blame the gloves im using. Im not even convinced they are surf gloves, they might just be gloves.
Damn c-skins gloves - never again! Im going to get some Xcel neoprene form now on.

I hate the way gloves make my arms feel like they have 2 sacks of lead attatched to the ends of them, but yesterday the pain was not worth it.

I'd def recommend the xcel gloves, I was given some lovely Xcel Infiniti gloves for crimbo, toasty warm and don't flood the wetsuit :D

The secret with gloves and boots is to make sure they're not too loose to allow too much water in as that makes you feel heavy and doesn't keep you warm, similary if they are too tight they do little to protect you from the cold as your extremeties are too close to the cold.

Hmm, I don't have a blasted car so I change by the beach at Tynemouth every session. Ok, it's cold but you just got to grim and bear it! The worst bits are yer feet and hands and as long as you don't lose all dexterity in your hands you'll be reet!

That happened to me once, before I got gloves, about 6 weeks ago, I got out and it was dark and i stood around too long and my fingers got literally too numb to move. I actually couldn't take my wetsuit off so I just put my hoody and kegs on over my wettie and hopped on the Metro like that. Boy did I get some funny looks when people noticed the puddle of water forming around my feet! :)
