Hello Tomcat,

Unfortunately I can't post pictures because html is not enabled on my account.. . . . I have tried to change my settings in my account often , but when I tick 'html enabled' it doesn't make any difference. I used to post pictures here but possibly the administrators disabled my account, either that or it's a glitch. Stranger still, if I log in as guest I can't enable html either, so perhaps this means that my ISP address sets of a 'no piccie' setting or something?

I didn't mention this previously but not being able to post pictures did keep me away from the forum.

What are they Roy? Tunnel fins? And how big is that board?

Hello Hiphopdec,

Tunnel fins with bulb tipped flex fins is what they are, some with mini vortex generators added.

The board is a 10'9" (smaller ones work too), I am building two of them at present, hoping to clock some very high speeds on them (over 30mph on a head high wave for a start)

Here's a standard 4 inch diameter tunnel to fit FCS tabs, available soonish.

So, you can buy these and fit them straight into your FCS plug?

They need FCS plugs fitted each side of the stringer, so it's unlikely that they will fit your standard trailing fin plugs, but yes, they improve performance, basically they provide loads of lift and loads of drive, increasing your speed dramatically on any board which has a flat tail rocker and lots of nose lift (like most shortboards, including classic singles, big wave guns, and 'longboard guns'. . . but not suitable for noseriding boards)

So the deal is that they can be placed behind a singlefin, instead of a thruster trailing fin, or as an add on to a fish.

The longest so far is 17 feet, am building a 19 footer too.

Also made a 14'9" which I haven't got any video of, sold it to a surf museum when short of cash one day.

We have done quite a few 11 and 12 foot boards, and a couple of 13'9"s

Right now I'm on a 10'9", some waves tomorrow too after a long flat spell, hoping that the arms will still work

had my first surf since july ,last week, and was surprisingly ok. I guess sanding camper van side panels by hand comes in handy some times.! So are all your boards balsa, or do you incorporate other materials into the designs?

Hand sanding's hard work alright, still hand sanding all our boards so that the sanding is all fore and aft.

We started out using balsa in 1995 and used it exclusively until 2000, then started using Redwood and Cedar. These days we are using Paulownia (Empress wood) which is an amazing surfboard wood, it's nearly as light as balsa but much harder and stronger (it has the highest strength to weight ratio of any timber in the world) it is also extremely durable and as if that's not enough it's also easy to work and can take a fine finish. A chambered Paulownia bord is slightly lighter than a solid balsa.

Looking forward to trying out a new fin setup tomorrow.

just only started really, but bought my first board last weekend. 9.4.
good size for me , and already had some nice rides. Happy as lary.

The fin set up, is it different to the fins ive been looking at tonight? or a varriation of the same principle.?
Can you tell much difference between the straight side fins, and the curved varriety?

Good stuff, you have the right end of the stick, or the right length of stick, or whatever.

If so then I have ridden the one with the right with the upright fins a couple of times but not the one with curved fins. Actually that board with the curved fins (the squidtail) belongs to my son James (15yrs) who built it himself, I hope that he gives me a turn, it's a Paulownia board, the one in the right is Poplar and Redwood.
