Female Surfers

Postby toreadorblue » Sun Aug 08, 2004 12:05 am

Now before i begin...i'm a girl.

i see a sizeable difference between most male and most femal surfers (with a handful of exceptions). it just seems like the guys really...charge, you know? they seem to have a more smooth, solid, gun-ho style. Obviously there have to be exceptions...but generally, this is how i see it. and it's really sad...i think "we" girls/women are too timid, "we" lean on the side of caution far too often. i really try not to...and i hope i don't. this might sound odd, but meditation and yoga really helps to lose that 'inner monologue' you have with yourself before pulling off a sick manuever, or getting into the lineup on a big day.

Girl Surfers - More power to ya

Postby Stoker » Sun Aug 08, 2004 2:11 pm

Some of its attitutude, but some of it is upper body strength. I started surfing in the late 70's when very few women dared to paddle out. It was a very testos scene. Now more women are surfing than ever. It's about time that women have some fun out there too.

Some guys are just going to be aggressive and jerks, and some women find that intimidating. But don't think that means you don't belong out there, or you have to surf like an aggressive guy if that's not your style. I say just have fun, and don't let the dudes drop in on you.

a little agro advice

Postby leahcim » Sun Aug 08, 2004 7:57 pm

look I have spent more time in the close to death scare yourself half to death zone than anyone that I have ever hung. with and I will tell you this if you want it more than any thing else, if it obsses your mind ,body and spirit more than anything else .when the thought of being broken or leaving this life becomes secondary to the task at hand .you will reach a zen state that will allow to preform with all the fury you have within your exsistance, To find the true harmony within the earth vibration we call waves. to get there you must also sacrifice all your petty fears all your joy all your hate only then will you feel the explosive power within self and the calm to weather the storm. So if you realy want it ask one question am I willing to sacrifice everything to see this one activity to its ultimate fullfillment. Is that the thing that will compleate your feeling of wholeness with exsistance if you say yes than there are no more questions you will need to ask about this feeling of fire. That flame will continue to grow unil you are no more.If it helps no matter if its a lie or not beleve gods got your back it will help dull the fright.

Winza dude, you really need to chill. I'm guessing you're new to this forum cos you seem to have quite an attitude on you at the minute. I've read about all of your posts and they're just about all negative and quite aggressive.

Just about everyone on here is cool with everyone else and make an effort to help out or give productive comments on threads. You should try it.

You may live a minute from the beach and have been surfing all your life but that makes you no better than anyone else on here. Try using your experience and knowledge to help out the guys who need it.

:)

p.s. female surfers have every right to be in the water as any male surfer. No one owns the sea. It's there to be appreciated and enjoyed by anyone who wants to.

i definetly see that women are much less agressive and willing to risk there necks for the big waves. on a day when there were like 9 foot faces i remember there was mabye one or two women out there.
for me, its not the fact that i dont have fear, its the fact that i would rather do it then be safe on thebeach. evertime i come on top of a nice size wave (8+) i always have this little gut feeling of fear, but i dont let it bother me.

Well said. I totally agree with you on that one. In order to progress with surfing I think you must have no fear or at least be able to push that fear out of your mind.
The way I see it is if anything did happen me in the water I couldn't think of a better way to go.

Yeh I think the reason there are less female surfers is the fear-factor, us girlies seem to get more scared on heavier days, but because the majority (there still must be exeptions) of males are ready to take those kinda conditions on the head, the males excel in comparison.
I think if there was as many surfer-dudettes as dudes, there would still be a difference, but not as noticeable, as its just the numbers which make the difference between males and females so great. If there was as many dudettes as dudes, we'd be giving them a run for their money, but this isnt ever gonna happen. There are so many girls out there that rip, no denying that, its just the ratio of males:females which'l never be balanced.

Body strength is also a big factor, as Stoker said.

It is a shame its such a male-dominated sport, but we girls just have to get used to that and exept it, that maybe us girls werent made to rip has hard as the guys?
Im not sure if anything I just said made any type of sense, but congratulations if youve read to down here :)

I holla git em girls

Postby michaeldl » Mon Aug 23, 2004 4:56 am

chill is good brah but somtimes its not all bout peace and lov .even if thats what we want.just think surfing is all about flow but u gotta bury the hard edge or u ain't gonna have no control. same thing in life u have to know when its important tolet things roll off ya and when to put your foot down weman are not espesaly good at being aggro.some are but sometimes they need a little coaching.if one of my girls gets steped on by some punk I let her spit in his eye then if dude gotta problem then he consults with higher ups and dude don't wanna go there trust!

i think that (no offence to any girl) that girls tend not to surf as hard. If you watch the womens asp and then the mens, theres a big difference. Put the top female surfer (forgot the name) against kelly slater and i believe kelly will win hands down...

a lot of girlies are less aggressive and it's really sad. look back into history and you'll see throughout it that not many women really got into any sports and thoroughly excelled. it's the same with surfing. most of us are really just now beginning to realize "hey we're finally being looked upon as atheletes too."

i feel lucky that i was brought up in a lifestyle that tought me aggressiveness and fearlessness.
