sorry to hear that man.

i have to disagree though. i used to enjoy "just being out in the water"

i love nature and i love the beach, but i dot have to be out in the ocean to enjoy it. if i go out and dont catch waves i get aggrivated. i had this discussion before with some others. maybe once youve surfed amazing stuff, you cant go back to being excited when its flat, which is why id enjoy more the relaxing on the beach.

i think id like the beautiful "urban jungles" like NYC, Boston, sanfran, or downtown chicago, etc.. but id definetly be missing a part of my life without either mountains and pine forests or ocean to explore. plus living downtown is too damn expensive, in any city.

im an old xxxxx at 21.

edit:

i go to school full time and work part time. 5 classes, 16 hours a week at work. one thing about hawaii is people dont associate it with work. we al work 40 hours a week and live in grass shacks. right. i know as well as anyone that once you live and work someplace, your opinion of it changes.

i dont think i will regret moving away.

Well, different people look at things differently. I don't know how'd I'd feel about surfing if i surfed in Hawaii. I know the attitude is a lot different and when other people have negative attitudes or are all competitive and agro, it tends to ruin the experience. I had that problem with a spot I used to surf after I got into a fight with some agro semi-locals who didn't like me because I was white.

And ofcourse I expect that you guys work and go to school - just saying work isn't nearly as bad when you have something cool to do in your freetime. Right now I have to try hard to find outdoor xxxxx I like to do. I took up Mountain Biking, but its pretty weak in comparison to surfing.

Anyhow, move somewhere else. I think its always a good idea to move around and try out new things. Even if you live in what I consider paradise.

Do you ever just go swim around with some fins in a really isolated beach? I don't know if you can make a sport out of that, but it's fun.

While you're there do some extreme bodysurfing :D

Surfing is cool and all. It really depends on where a person is at. If you have killer waves its awesome, if not, then it can suck.

Well social life and life in general in Costa Rica SUCKS!!! If it wasn't for the waves I'd be outta here in a beat. Chicks sucks, party sucks, etc. But our waves rock! I wont promote it that much, cuz we have a lot of people coming down here and its getting ugly in some places. Anyhow, I had a time when I would get inpatient if the ocean was flat but lately I work so much that if the ocean is flat I'll just lay face foward on the hot sand and that IS RELAXIN!!! to hell with YOGA, hot sand is the best to disconnect yourself from the noise, problems, fights, wars, bad vibes, drugs and tragedies in generall. The beach is the best therapy period! Take that Dr Melfi, lol.

If you get all stressed out by the size of the surf, try heading to the city and chilling there for a while. You will appreciate it much more after a while.

tomcat ive never tried that. i want to do it though, but with a snorkel and goggles. you could also do spear fishing, but i dont like killing for fun, and im too lazy to prepare fish that still has scales and a head and such.

foamsurfer - you say youre in med school, are you going for a PHD? do you have your MA or MS?

where did you surf and get harassed? here i hardly ever get harassed. i know where not to go though, suprisiingly waikiki is one of them. locals go there just to harass tourists in the water.

Btw, Formosa = Taiwan; not FOAM! ;)

not going for a PhD, just an MD. I went finished ugrad with a BA in philosophy (laugh all you want, it was easy and sorta fun), spent a year working overseas, then started medschool. I don't have an MA or MS, no need really unless you need to make your application look a little better.

I only got harassed once, it was in a crowded and totally shitty beach break in Taiwan. The spot was only a few hours from Taipei, so it got overcrowded with the Taipei surfers who were trying to get away from the crowds in Taipei. Some dipshit on a long board dropped in on me and I didn't get off the wave. fleshin' damn near hit me. When I came up, he started cursing at me and paddled over and tried to start a fight, then about five of his friends paddled over and started talking xxxxx about how I shouldn't even be in their beach (keep in mind this spot is about as "local" as a subway station). After a few minutes of bravado, I decided to get out before it got ugly. I heard a little later that these guys (who aren't locals) start fights with all foreigners all the time - and had even jumped a few guys in the parking lot. I said fleshin' that spot (Which sucks anyway) and started surfing in a spot with 10X better waves and almost no surfers.
