Get lessons or just get stuck in?

Postby Jason Andrews » Thu Dec 07, 2006 10:27 am

Hi,
I want to get into surfing but don't have any mates that surf and I live a couple of hours from the sea.

Would people recomend that I get lessons or just get stuck in and rent a giant foam board ? I don't want to annoy any locals by getting in their way but equally I also don't really want to join a load of school kids for lessons.

Cheers

I think lessons would be a good idea, learn the basics and then pratice, pratice, pratice.

I took lessons last year even though ive surfed for a couple of years and they helped me to get rid of some bad habits ! :)

You can book one on one lessons if you dont want to surf in a group !

I started off with 3 lessons just to get the basics down, then bought a board and practice whenever I can....which isn't as often as I'd like! :?

Oooh I am a qualified instructor...always been to lazy and/or busy to teach thought..but the few times I did seemed to really help the people.
I taught a 15 year old kid...big guy and he is on a 6'8 shredding cutbacks in about 6 months. But he did spend like 6 days a week and 12 hours each day every week for 6 months surfing.. A lot of practice..

You can learn on your own but it would be much more enjoyable for you to take some lessons. Spend the money and have a good time.

Have a lesson first before you start to spend out . you may not like it. And hire your board and wettie, until you are sure you want to keep it up. :) Good luck
PS Learn the rules also 8)

get stuck in mate. just read the lessons on the main site here and go have a bash. even if you suck you'll get the feeling whether you like it or not. if you like it and you do suck thats when to get a lesson. remember yo might pick it up quickly on your own so dont waste the money on lessons until you know you wont.
